What is the importance of money in our lives? How do we reconcile our need for money and the fact that Christ tells us that we cannot serve both God and money?
Matthew 6:24 NKJV “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
The world teaches that “money makes the world go round.” However what does Jesus teach? Jesus had NO PROBLEMS with money in itself. Jesus however had a problem with people’s WRONG ATTITUDE towards money. Ask yourself – Do you work FOR money? Or does money work FOR YOU? Are you money’s servant? Or is money YOUR SERVANT? Jesus clearly said that we CANNOT serve two masters; we CANNOT serve God and money. Was Jesus saying that on this earth we should not need or have any use for money? Of course not. I believe Jesus wants us to change our attitude towards how we view money. The truth is money should be a TOOL that works for US. Our attitude should be that money is our servant, and in no way are we supposed to treat money as our master. Our ONLY master should be God. Jesus wants us to be loyal to God and not towards money.
Matthew 6:32-33 NKJV For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Jesus says that our “heavenly Father KNOWS that we (you) need all these things”, however Jesus wants us to look towards God as our source and NOT towards money as our source. Jesus’ formula is that if we seek God FIRST, then the rest shall be added to us – by GOD. Jesus wants us to SEEK THE GIVER – and the Giver is God. Money can buy you a lot of things – but the truth is money can’t buy you a good relationship with God; money can’t buy your salvation; money can’t buy you peace; money can’t buy you joy; money can’t buy you a great marriage. Just look at how many celebrities and famous people are unhappy through alcohol, drug abuse and marriage issues even though they have lots of money. However GOD can provide EVERYTHING you need which money cannot provide. God can provide you not only with material wealth, but God can also provide you with peace, joy, love and righteousness in His Son Jesus Christ.
Psalm 24:1 NKJV The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.
Money does not make the world go round. God does. The earth was not made by money. God made the earth. Therefore our Master and our loyalty is to God.
Philippians 4:19 NKJV
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Everyday we try to earn money. The deception however is to presume that money is a source because we earn money as income. God is not saying that we should not earn money, however He is pointing out that our REAL TREASURE is not money, but it is God.
God is actually our REAL SOURCE. God is actually the One who will supply ALL our needs according to HIS riches. Money therefore is simply a TOOL.
Therefore our attitude towards money should be that we do not serve money at the expense of disobeying God.
So what is the importance of money? Money is not as important as its Source. More importantly, desire God and trust Him that only He will supply all your needs according to His riches.
