At Your Word

Luke 5:5 NKJV
But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing…

Peter, James and John were experienced fishermen. Fishing was their day-to-day trade and profession which helped them earn money and feed their families.
In Luke 5 we learn that these 3 men had been fishing the whole night but they had not caught any fish at all. It’s a bit like life. Sometimes you can spend a lot of time working hard but not actually achieving any results. Sometimes you work but fail to see the fruits of your labour. You have a lot of experience in your profession but you are just not getting the dividends and profits from what you are doing.

Luke 5:4 NKJV
When He (Jesus) had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Then Jesus takes an interest in the fishing profession of these 3 men. You see, God is interested in every area of your life. Jesus tells Peter to launch the nets out again to catch some fish.
Peter initially responds by leaning on his own understanding and his natural experience by informing Jesus that they had already been fishing the whole night and they caught nothing.
Also if one were to view the situation from a natural point-of-view, Peter was an experienced fisherman and Jesus had been a carpenter, therefore what instruction can a carpenter give a fisherman about how to catch fish?
However, Peter was humble enough to accept and obey Jesus’ instruction to re-launch their nets again.
So despite the natural circumstance; despite the fact that they had caught nothing; despite they had years of fishing experience, Peter trusted Jesus enough to obey His word.
As soon as the fishermen obeyed Jesus, they ended up catching a massive amount of fish because of their obedience, and Peter suddenly realized and understood Jesus’ spiritual authority and just how great and awesome Jesus is.

Luke 5:8 NKJV
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

In your own life, do you trust and obey God? Or do you only lean on your own understanding; on your own knowledge and on your own experience of life?
Sometimes God requires that you have faith in Him first and obey Him first, even when you don’t quite understand His instructions. Peter suddenly understood the Lordship of Christ after he obeyed and saw the results of obeying Jesus.

Luke 5:5 NKJV
…nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.

Therefore you might be doing some work or job in your life in which you don’t seem to be getting results. Involve Jesus in the matter. Listen to God’s word regarding your situation. Listen to Him. Obey Him and watch the results. This is what Peter, James and John did.

TODAY. At God’s word – obey Him.
