What is the Great Commission?

Matthew 28:19-20
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

What is the Great Commission? In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus commissions us to “go and make disciples of all nations” and to teach them to observe according to all that Christ has commanded.
Now that scripture doesn’t mean that we should all therefore become missionaries or pastors but it means that all Christians are commissioned or called to evangelize or share the gospel of Christ to anyone.
We can all share the gospel to a friend, a colleague at work or even a total stranger. We can all make disciples and disciple people towards Jesus Christ and NOT towards men.

What is a Disciple?
The word disciple comes from the word “discipline”. A disciple is a person who is a disciplined follower of Jesus Christ. A disciple not only grows in Christ but a disciple will also make other disciples.

Therefore the great commission goes beyond just sharing the gospel but it also involves TEACHING or making disciples. People need to be taught formally or informally how live according to the word of God. For example: A friend can disciple a friend; a person can disciple his relative; and of course a pastor can disciple a member of a church.
Jesus tells us that we are not to discriminate – but we are to disciple “all the nations”.

God wants us to share the gospel about the life, death and resurrection of Christ and the price He paid for our sins on the cross. And so, God wants us to disciple people to Jesus Christ and to follow after Christ only.
We are not to disciple people to follow after men / pastors but out mandate as Christians is to point people to Christ and to His word.

The great commission is about bringing the lost to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ and then equipping them to be able to also share the gospel and to disciple others to our Lord Jesus Christ.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to
follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God

Where Will You Go, When You Die?

All of us at some point will face death. Today you might be alive but nobody knows the time of his/her death except God.
Statistics reflect that over 153000 people die every single day. This means that more than 56 million people die every year.

The most important thing we must ask ourselves however is: Where will you go when you die?
Will you go to heaven – or will you go to hell? Or do you presume that you will just return to dust and seize to exist?

The Bible tell us that we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). Therefore just as God is Spirit, we as humans also have a spirit. We are more than just flesh. But when our flesh dies, our spirit will still live.
Therefore when we die, our spirit will either go to heaven or go to hell and where we go depends on just one very important choice that we make in our life.
That simple choice is whether or not we believe and genuinely accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord & Saviour.

Jesus said: “In My Father’s house there are many rooms… I go and prepare a place for you” (John 14:2) and then He says “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
Jesus also says that unless we are born again – we cannot enter the kingdom of God (John 3:3).

So if you would like to go to heaven when you die – you simply by faith accept & receive Jesus Christ into your life. You put your total trust in Him to be your Lord & Saviour.
Salvation is a free gift because Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross. The Bible says that we are saved by grace and not by our own works or personal merit (Ephesians 2:8,9).

Is Hell Scary?

I’ve at times encountered various unbelievers whilst evangelizing who have retorted to the gospel by exclaiming “I’m not afraid of hell!!! You Christians like to use hell to scare and threaten people!!”

So the question is: Should people be afraid of hell? Is hell scary? Also, should Christians talk to people about hell whenever they are sharing the gospel?

In order understand whether hell is a scary place or not, we must understand how hell is described in the Bible.

Below are some of the descriptions of hell according to the Bible:

1. It is a Place of Everlasting Fire (Matthew 25:41)
2. It is a Place of Outer Darkness (Matthew 22:13)
3. It is a Place of Weeping & Gnashing of Teeth (Matthew 25:30)
4. It is a Place of Eternal Torment (Luke 16:22-28)
5. It is a Lake of Fire (Revelations 19:20)

Therefore to understand what hell is – take a moment to imagine if you, or a person you loved where to spend eternity in a lake of burning fire; or if you, or a person you loved where to spend eternity in a place of eternal torment.
Would such a place not be scary? Would it really be stance of “bravery” and “courage” to be unafraid of hell??? Or would it be evidence of a lack of Biblical understanding, wisdom & knowledge about what hell is really all about?

Hell is a place that NOBODY should desire to go to. It should be a place that people should fear to go to.
It is place that people should preach and warn about.

We live in a world where there are all kinds of warning signs around us. Perhaps you’ve seen a “Do Not Enter” sign; perhaps you’ve seen a “Beware” sign; perhaps you’ve seen a “This Way Only” sign or a “Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted” sign.
These kind of warning signs exist in order to WARN us of danger; they exist in order to PROTECT us from danger; they exist in order to INFORM us of danger and they exist in order to PREVENT us from suffering the consequences of doing anything that is unlawful.

The reason the Bible talks about hell and warns us about hell is because God does NOT want us to go to hell.
Therefore God warns us that anyone who rejects Him & rejects the work of Christ on the Cross is in danger of going to hell.
God’s motive is not merely to scare us for the sake of scaring us – but God is WARNING us; God is PROTECTING us and God is INFORMING us that if we do not heed His warning signs there will be consequences.
2 Peter 3:9 says “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that anyone should perish but that all should come to repentance”.

GOING TO HELL CAN BE AVOIDED
As scary as hell is – going to such a place can be avoided when we die.
The scriptures teach us that Jesus Christ paid for our sins on the cross. Though we are all meant to go to hell because of sin – Jesus Christ was crucified for our sins in our place. Jesus Christ paid the debt that we could not pay. Jesus took the punishment and wrath of God upon Himself instead of us so that whosever believes and accepts Jesus Christ into his/her life will have eternal life and not perish (John 3:16).
Salvation offered through Christ is a gift which we receive through faith in Christ. We do not enter heaven and avoid hell because of our own personal effort or behavior but it is through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord & Saviour and believing in the work He did for us on the cross that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9).
We can avoid hell not because we deserve to avoid it – we avoid hell because Jesus Christ saved us out of the love and grace of God.

What is the Grace of God?

What is Grace

What is grace? Grace is to receive something that you don’t deserve. Therefore the grace of God is when God gives us what we don’t deserve.
The Greek word for grace is [Charis] meaning favour; kindness.
Therefore the grace of God is unmerited favour or unmerited kindness. When God shows us grace, it’s not because we deserve it – but God gives us grace because it is who He is – God is a gracious God.

Difference Between Grace & Mercy
Mercy is when God does NOT give us what we deserve. Mercy withholds punishment we deserve. Grace is when God GIVES us what we don’t deserve.
For example, Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. This is a verse that incorporates both the mercy and the grace of God.
Through Romans 6:23 we can learn that since man is a sinner and is guilty of sin, man deserves death (which is spiritual separation from God or hell). However, God is able to show MERCY to man by NOT giving man what he actually deserves, which is death. God therefore withholds the punishment we deserve. Instead God has shown GRACE to man by offering man unmerited or undeserved kindness by giving to man the GIFT of eternal life in Jesus Christ.

Salvation by Grace
Therefore according to Romans 6:23, eternal life is an unmerited GIFT.
As you may know, a gift is something that one receives freely or for free. A gift is not paid for by the one who receives the gift. Therefore we receive eternal life as a gift by the grace of God.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast”.
Therefore when rephrased, Ephesians 2:8-9 is saying that Christians are saved by the unmerited favour or undeserved kindness of God. Furthermore this salvation is a gift of God through faith in Jesus Christ alone and not because of a person’s personal effort or work.

Therefore the grace of God is not earned. The grace of God is not something you work for. The grace of God is not something that you receive because you deserve it.
The grace of God is extended to all of mankind irrespective of race, background or belief system.

Ephesians 1:7-8
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

According to the riches of God’s grace we receive redemption and the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ and the blood He shed of mankind on the cross.
A Christian is saved by grace alone through faith or total trust in Jesus Christ. It is not through the law or through personal effort that a person is saved but it is because of the undeserved kindness of God.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS LORD & SAVIOUR? WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACCEPT THAT IT’S NOT BY YOUR OWN EFFORT OR WORKS THAT YOU ARE SAVED – BUT IT IS ONLY BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST THAT YOU ARE SAVED?

Why Not Make Your Eternal Decision NOW?

How Can We Spread The Gospel?

How can we spread the gospel of Jesus Christ? What ways or what methods can we use to spread the gospel that God loves mankind so much that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for sins of the whole world so that we may have eternal life and fellowship with God (John 3:16).
The word “gospel” means good news. Evangelism is the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore we have a mandate to spread the good news to many unbelievers concerning God’s saving grace (Ephesians 2:8,9).
In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus says “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”.
We therefore have been given the great commission to spread the gospel and make disciples of all nations.

Below are a list of ways or methods by which we can spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to unbelievers:

1. Street Evangelism
Street evangelism involves sharing the gospel to the public or strangers in the streets or neighbourhoods. For example, through personal soul-winning you can initiate conversations with a stranger in the street by asking: “Where do you think you will go when you die?”
Another option in street evangelism is to preach the gospel in the streets at a specific location in a public area like the town park where people are most likely to sit or stop to listen.

2. Friendship Evangelism
We all have people whom we associate with who are unbelievers. These unbelievers could be friends, workmates or relatives.
We can share the gospel with people whom we see frequently and whom we know to be non-christians.

3. Door to Door
This refers to selecting a neighbourhood and going from house to house and explaining the gospel to people in their homes.

4. Social Media & Internet
We can use social media to spread the gospel. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, a website and the like can all be used to the glory of God. These internet based facilities can help you reach a wide variety of people across the world and to spread the gospel.

5. Print Media
You can use gospel tracts, Christian booklets, Christian books, Bibles to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Giving someone something to go home and read that explains the gospel helps a person.

6. Television, Radio & Entertainment
Sketch-boards, puppets, movies, plays, music and television are other methods of evangelism.

Below are a few Bible verses that encourage us to spread the gospel and evangelise:

2 Timothy 4:5 NKJV
But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Ephesians 4:11-12 NKJV
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ

Mark 16:15 NKJV
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

2 Timothy 4:2 NKJV
Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

Matthew 28:19 NKJV
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

Matthew 5:16 NKJV
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

ARE YOU A BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN? DO YOU WANT TO BE A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST?

Perhaps you are reading this article and you have not given your life to Jesus Christ. Or perhaps you are not sure whether you are a Christian or not.
Salvation is FREE. Jesus Christ paid for our sins on the cross so that we may have eternal life (John 3:16). Therefore when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord & Saviour it is not because of our own personal effort but we become Christians by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8,9).

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
