Don’t Compare Yourself

2 Corinthians 10:12-13 NKJV

For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

When God created you – He made you to be UNIQUE.
There is NO OTHER PERSON WHO IS LIKE YOU.
YOU are ONE-OF-A-KIND.
Even twins are not really identical. They are different.
Even though you are different, it doesn’t mean that being different is bad. You are You.

Paul says that it is not wise to make comparisons. The reason is because this leads to all sorts of problems and it does not glorify God who created you.
Therefore if you are going to measure yourself, do not measure yourself by other people’s standards. You must measure yourself by God’s standard.

Comparing ourselves with other people can lead to the following problems

1. ENVY
Acts 7:9 NKJV – “And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt.”
We can become envious of others, and envy is a sin. Joseph’s brothers envied Joseph because of his dreams that they wanted to harm him.

2. LOW SELF-ESTEEM
Romans 9:20-21 NKJV – ‘But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”
We end up failing to appreciate our own value, and the uniqueness and purpose for which God made us.

3. COVETING
Exodus 20:17 NKJV – “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Coveting can be a result of making comparisons. We compare our processions with others and therefore we want what belongs to others

4. BOASTING or PRIDE
Proverbs 8:13 NKJV – “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate”
When we think that we are better than other people, we begin to boast and have pride in us. Our speech becomes full of pride, but the Lord hates the pride of life. God desires that we be humble.

Therefore don’t compare yourself; don’t compare your assets; don’t compare your looks; don’t compare your relationships; don’t compare your life with that of other people.
Rather measure yourself against the will and expectations of Christ and God’s word.
