What Are Christians Saved From?

Romans 10:9,10,13 ESV
Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved … 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

What does it mean when somebody becomes biblically saved? What does Biblical salvation mean to the Christian and what are Christians saved from? Also – why is Biblical salvation important?

Biblical salvation is the means by which God provides redemption and deliverance from sin through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Biblical salvation is an act of God’s love and grace through Jesus Christ to provide man with eternal life and an eternal relationship with Him. Man cannot save himself, but only Jesus can save man because Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through” Him (John 14:6).

FI3 - saved

Therefore, when a person becomes a Christian, what is the Christian saved from and why is it important for all non-Christians / non-believers to be saved?

The Christian is saved from the following:

(1) ETERNITY IN HELL – (Revelation 21:8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”)
Life on this earth is temporary. However, the “second death” as mentioned in Revelations 21:8 is eternal separation from God where people who have not been saved will spend an eternity in hell. Therefore a Christian is saved from eternity in hell while the non-believer will spend eternity in hell upon death on this earth.
(Matthew 25:46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.“)

(2) THE POWER OF SIN IN ONE’S PERSONAL LIFE – (Romans 6:5-7For if we have been united with Him (Jesus) in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with Him (Jesus) in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.)
Christ Jesus has saved us from the power of sin over our lives and we are given strength and the ability to overcome sin through the Holy Spirit. The Christian’s character and nature should resemble that of Jesus and not of the worldly lusts and sinful passions. Sin no longer has dominion over the true born again Christian.
(Romans 6:12-14Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.)

(3) THE WORRIES & INFLUENCES OF THIS WORLD – (Philippians 4:6-7Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.)
The Christian is saved from such issues like anxieties, depression and the worries of the world for long as he/she is truly trusting in God. The peace of God is not necessarily the absence of problems or challenges, but the peace of God is an internal peace and tranquility in the midst of the problems. Therefore even though the Christian faces external problems, he is internally and spiritually confident in Christ that he will overcome the problems and he is not allowing such problems to negatively hurt him. The Christian continues to be governed by the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit.
(John 14:27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.)

(4) THE POWER OF THE DEVIL & THE DEMONIC – (Luke 10:19-20 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”)
The Christian is saved from demonic influences. For example, a Christian cannot be demon possessed. Instead a Christian has power in Christ Jesus to overcome demonic influences and attacks. The Christian is protected by God from the devils influences and God is able to provide a way out whenever we are tempted by the devil. (1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.)

(5) FROM THE WRATH & JUDGMENT OF GOD – (Romans 1:18-19For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.)
Sinful living does not please God and neither does He tolerate sin. A Christian is saved from facing God’s wrath and God’s judgment upon the unbelievers and those who would choose to live an ungodly life on earth. The non-believer will face condemnation while the Christian will not be condemned; therefore a Christian is saved from condemnation.
(John 3:18-20Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.)

GOD OFFERS SALVATION TO EVERY PERSON & NON-CHRISTIAN

2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
God offers salvation to EVERY person who has not yet become a Christian. It is God’s desire that EVERYONE should have eternal life and that EVERYONE spend eternity in Heaven with Him as long as we accept, believe, repent & receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Salvation is a CHOICE that a person must choose to want. To refuse the Biblical salvation that God offers through Christ Jesus is to choose eternity in hell (and the 4 other points mentioned above). But to choose salvation through Christ Jesus is to choose eternal life with God.

HOW TO BECOME A GENUINE CHRISTIAN
If you are not a Christian, and you want to become a born-again Christian, you can do so by confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that He paid for all your sins and came to save you from the power of the enemy so that you may have an eternal everlasting relationship with Him.

Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to
follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God

Why Not Make Your Eternal Decision NOW?

We become born again Christians by GRACE through FAITH or TOTAL TRUST in Jesus Christ as our Lord & Savior (Galatians 3:26) & (Ephesians 2:8,9). Salvation is a FREE gift received through FAITH in Christ.

This prayer is only an EXPRESSION of your faith, belief & trust in Jesus.

“Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your love. I thank You that You died on the cross for me and resurrected so that I may have life through You.
I confess Lord that I have sinned against You and today I ask You to forgive me of all of my sins, past present and future.
I repent of all of my sins and I ask You to cleanse me Jesus.
Thank You for forgiving my sins.
From this moment, come into my life Lord Jesus & take full control of my life. I want to follow You Jesus and I want to follow Your ways. Save me and from today, make me the person You want me to be.
I receive You Lord Jesus right now by faith. I make You my Lord and Savior – Amen”

How to Seek God’s Will (Part 2) – God’s Word

In the first part of the series of How To Seek God’s Will (Part 1), I summarized that in order to discover God’s will or purpose for your life we need to do the following:

(1) READ, STUDY & MEDIATE GOD’S WORD
(2) SPEND TIME WITH GOD
(3) ASK GOD FOR WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IN YOUR LIFE
(4) DON’T LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING
(5) TRUST GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART & HAVE FAITH IN HIM
(6) COMMIT ALL YOUR PLANS TO HIM FIRST AND SEEK HIS GUIDANCE THROUGH HIS WORD AND BY HIS SPIRIT.
(7) LEARN TO LISTEN, RECOGNISE AND OBEY HIS VOICE

Therefore in Part 2 we will focus on (1) READ, STUDY & MEDITATE GOD’S WORD.

Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

The primary way of knowing God’s will & purpose for your life is through God’s word.
Some people might consult horoscopes in order to make decisions; some look to dreams & feelings; some hope to hear God’s audible voice; some might look for somebody to “prophesy” over them.
However if you desire to seek God’s specific will for your life and for various situations in your life, then you must read, study, meditate and obey God’s word. You must seek your Maker through His word in order to understand the will and plans that He has for you.
In Joshua 1:8, God promised Joshua that his way would be prosperous and successful if Joshua was to meditate on God’s word and to obey according to what is written in it.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Do you want to be thoroughly equipped for God’s will and work for your life? Do you desire to know God’s will and plan for your life? Are you confused about which direction to take in your life? Do you desire to know how to solve a specific issue in your life?
If the answer is “YES”, then you need to study and meditate God’s word if you are seeking God’s will and plan for your life. Paul tells Timothy that God’s word is profitable for (a) doctrine (b) reproof (c) correction and (d) instruction in righteousness.
The Bible speaks of God’s nature and God’s values. And whatever plan that God has for your life, that plan will always be consistent with God’s nature and God’s values.
Too often when we are confused about life or about which direction or decision to make in our lives, we are quick to seek answers to our issues from friends, relatives or other people rather than to FIRST seek answers to our issues or problems through the word of God.
Therefore if you are seeking God’s will for your life learn from Him through His word and allow His word to equip you for the good work that the Lord has for you.

John 14:21
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.

Do you want Jesus to manifest and reveal Himself to you? Do you want Him to reveal His plans for you? Then you must keep His word. You cannot separate God from His word.  Neither can God contradict what He has spoken in His word. This is why meditating on God’s word is imperative if you are to know God’s will for your life. You cannot ask God to show you His will for your life but not be willing to study or meditate on His word. If you want Jesus to manifest in your life then you must be willing to manifest yourself to His word.

Psalm 119:9-11
How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.

We see in Psalm 119:9-11 that the Psalmist prays to God that with his whole heart he seeks God. You will also notice that the Psalmist is aware that if he is to walk a clean path in life then he must “take heed according to God’s word” and he must not wander from God’s commandments.
Likewise in our own lives, our ability to discover God’s word and God’s will for our life or for specific circumstances is by knowing and meditating on God’s word.

Can God Do Anything?

I remember several years ago I was a Sunday School teacher for some 6 year old toddlers. One day I was teaching them about the power and magnificence of God. As I taught them I would tell them that God created the earth and the animals, and that God can be everywhere at the same time, and about the wonderful and amazing miracles that God performs. During the lesson, I then confidently remember telling my class: “God can do anything! Nothing is impossible with God!”
As soon as I said those words, a young 6 year old boy in my class slowly put his hand up to speak and he softly said to me: “There’s something that God cannot do – God can’t lie”.
What an awesome lesson I learnt from that young boy’s statement because it is such a true statement.

God cannot do things that are not in accordance with His nature or which are contrary to His word.
Below are some things that God CANNOT do.

(1) GOD CANNOT SIN – It is not in God’s nature to sin, to lie or to perform any kind of wickedness. God is holy, pure and sinless. God is not corrupt nor can He be tempted to become corrupt or to sin. His thoughts, His motives, His actions are always good and righteous and just. (1 Samuel 2:2 – “No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.”) ; (Numbers 23:19 – “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?)

(2) GOD CANNOT CONTRADICT HIMSELF – God cannot change His mind when it comes to issues that are consistent with His very nature and His word. He is not confused nor can anybody confuse God. God’s word, the Bible does not contradict itself nor can God behave in any way that is contradictory to His nature. (Malachi 3:6 – “For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.) ; (Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.)

(3) GOD CANNOT BECOME A FALSE GOD – False gods might try to imitate or counterfeit the power and nature of the one true God. However, God himself will not imitate anybody. God does not need to become like anyone. God is God and there is only ONE God. Therefore God, for example, cannot become Buddha or a god from another religion. (Isaiah 43:10 – “You are My witnesses,” says the Lord, “And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me.)

(4) GOD CANNOT TEMPT ANYONE – God cannot tempt anybody to perform sinful desires. God does not cause people to commit a sinful act. God is not the author of wickedness nor does He make people commit wicked acts. It is not in God’s nature to deceive anyone. (James 1:13 – Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.)

(5) GOD CANNOT HATE YOU – God is love. God cannot hate His creation. When He made all that He created in Genesis, God saw that what He had made was good. God loves us even when we are at our very worst. This is why He sent His begotten Son Jesus to die for us. (Romans 5:8 – But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.)

(6) GOD CANNOT SHOW FAVOURITISM – God does not have favourites. He loves us the same. God does not judge anybody unjustly or unfairly. (Acts 10:34-35 – Then Peter opened his mouth and said:”In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him”.)

(7) GOD CANNOT BE MOCKED – God cannot be ridiculed. He cannot feel mocked because God is all knowing and all sufficient and He lacks nothing. There is nothing that anyone can say about God that will make God feel mocked or inadequate. (Galatians 6:7 – Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.)

(8) GOD CANNOT BE DECEIVED – Nobody can deceive God. He cannot be fooled because He is all knowing, omniscient and almighty. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. (Hebrews 4:13 – And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.)

(9) GOD CANNOT BE DEFEATED – God cannot lose. The reason He cannot be defeated is because nobody can match God’s power and might. There is nobody like God and therefore He has no equal. God has already won the battle against the devil through Jesus Christ and what Jesus did on the cross for mankind. As a Christian, the scriptures say that you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37). God is triumphant and it is not in His nature to lose. (Psalm 147:5 – Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.) ; (Matthew 19:26 – But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”)

(10) GOD CANNOT ALLOW A PERSON WHO IS NOT A CHRISTIAN TO ENTER HEAVEN – A person who is not born again / saved / a true Christian cannot enter into Heaven. To become a Christian, a person must believe and receive Jesus Christ as his/her Lord & Saviour. The only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ.
John 3:3 NKJV – Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 14:6 NKJV – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”

Jeremiah 33:2-4
“Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it— the Lord is his name: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Knowing the nature of God is very important. God will not ignore us if we call to Him and if we have a genuine desire to know Him and have a relationship with Him. There are MANY things that God will do in your personal life which are consistent with His word and with His nature. Allow Him to guide you and help you.

Friendship with God

John 15:15-16 NKJV
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

A friend is defined as a person you know, like, trust and love; it is somebody who loves you back, knows you, trusts you and is with you during good times and bad times.
As a born again Christian, your relationship with God is not just a Master – servant relationship. Your relationship with the LORD is also a friendship. That means that you are a friend of God and God is also your friend.

Exodus 33:11 NKJV
So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend …

If you therefore have a friendship with God, this means that you can share your life, your experience, your worries and your plans with God, just as you would with any other human friend in your life. God Himself is also able to share with you His thoughts, His plans, His ideas, His companionship with you – because you are both friends.
Moses and God were so close in their relationship that the scripture says that the Lord spoke “face to face” with Moses. Their relationship was pure friendship. It was not a Master-servant, or employer-employee relationship.

James 2:23 NKJV
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.

What makes a person become a friend of God? Abraham BELIEVED God. Abraham did not doubt God’s word. Abraham obeyed God’s word – even to the point of almost sacrificing Isaac as the command of God. Abraham was close to God and walked in righteousness as a result of his faith in God.
In our own life, God also wants us to be His friend through Christ Jesus. We must also believe God and walk in righteousness. We too must be close to God just as Moses and Abraham. And Jesus being the Way, the Truth and the Life provides us with the ability to walk in direct friendship with the almighty God.

John 15:13-15 NKJV
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you

HOW TO BECOME A FRIEND OF GOD
If you desire to be a friend of God, the first step is to become a Christian. When you become a Christian, you become a citizen of God’s kingdom and you become a child of God. If you are not a Christian, and you want to become a born-again Christian, you can do so by confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that He came to save you from the power of the enemy and so that you may have an eternal everlasting relationship with Him.

Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

What Is A Nominal Christian?

Are you a nominal Christian or are you a true, genuine born again Christian? What is the difference between a religious person and a true born again Christian believer? Can a person be identified as a true Christian just because they go to church regularly, pray, read the Bible and even have a position or status in the church?
Jesus warned that not every person who claims to be a Christian is in fact a REAL Christian. There are some people who are unrepentant hypocrites and then there are some people who are true believers. It is therefore important for us to continuously walk as TRUE born again believers in Christ.

Matthew 7:21-23 NKJV
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

WHAT IS A NOMINAL CHRISTIAN?
The word “nominal” means, “in name only.” Therefore nominal Christians are Christians in name only, but yet their life, their fruits, their true inner beliefs, their works (even the things they do in secret) is unrepentant & contrary to the word of God even though they bear the name “Christian”. Nominal Christians will know exactly how to act “Christian” or “religious” outwardly, but either in secret or because of false indoctrination or self-deception, they will be living a life that is hypocritical, deceptive and rebellious against God and His word.
In summary, a nominal Christian can also be defined as a person who may behave religiously, but yet he is a false or hypocrite who does not walk or believe in the salvation that God offers by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8,9).

John 5:39-40 NKJV
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

The problem with being religious is that religion can lead a person to knowledge yet that knowledge will not lead them to a relationship. The purpose of the Scriptures is not only that we may have knowledge, but that we may have a relationship with the One who wrote the Scriptures – God.
The Pharisees had a knowledge of the written logos or Scriptures, yet they refused to have a relationship with the God with whom these Scriptures talked about. This is the problem with being religious.

It is very important to note that the word of God regards nominal Christians in the same category as unbelievers and not as genuine born again Christians.
Matthew 7:21-23 clearly shows that there will be judgement upon people who thought they were true Christian believers but in the eyes of the Lord, these people were deceptive nominal Christians or false believers.
So therefore, what are the characteristics that distinguish a real born again Christian from a nominal Christian?

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A NOMINAL CHRISTIAN?

Here are a few examples in God’s word concerning God’s view and God’s judgement about nominal Christians and those who are religious but yet are self-deceived due to false doctrine:

(1) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Are IniquitousMatthew 7:21-23 NKJV“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
There is so much we can learn from Matthew 7:21-23. The fact that Jesus called these nominal Christians “lawless” or “iniquitous” shows that they lived a life that was deliberately and habitually sinful and contrary to God’s word and God’s principles even though they claimed to be real Christians. God wants people who walk the talk. God wants Christians who put into practice His teachings and values. According to Jesus, not everyone who calls Him “Lord, Lord” is a real, true Christian, but he who obeys His will. Are you a religious person or are you a person seeking and obeying the will of God in your life? The reason why Jesus dismisses these false believers is because they “practice lawlessness”. They loved to practice lawlessness. An example is a certain group of the homosexual movement which claims to be Christian whilst practicing or engaging in homosexual activities. Their lifestyle, their actions and what they claim to believe were not corresponding; on one hand they called Him “Lord, Lord”, but yet what they practiced habitually in their lives did not show / testify that Jesus was in fact the Lord of their lives.

(2) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Are Disobedient to Christ – Luke 6:46-47 NKJV“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?”
God is not just interested in lip service. God expects our obedience. God expects us to listen to Him and to do what He says. When we claim to follow Him but yet live a disobedient lifestyle then we risk becoming false believers or nominal Christians. For example, a homosexual person who refuses to repent of such a sinful lifestyle may claim to be a Christian. Yet such a lifestyle is not supported by God & the Bible mentions that those who practice this type of sexual lifestyle “will not inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9). Disobedience arises when we put our own personal interests before the interests of God. Disobedience arises when we follow our own principles and discard the values and principles mentioned in God’s word. Disobedience arises when we prefer to do things on our own terms and not on God’s terms. Isaiah 29:13 says “ Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men”

(3) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Have Deceived Themselves – 2 Timothy 4:3-5 ESVFor the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Nominal Christians do not correctly interpret the scriptures. They distort the meaning of various scriptures so that they can justify ungodly and self-serving behaviour. For example, certain cults like the Jehovah’s Witness do not believe that Jesus is God. Neither do they believe in hell or in salvation by grace. Yet they call themselves Christians. Nominal Christians do not like to be corrected by the truth in God’s word which is why they would try to distort the scriptures. They also dislike godly rebuke and instructions. A nominal Christian would rather listen to preaching or issues that do not rebuke his/her sinful lifestyle.

(4) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Do Not Abide in Jesus – John 15:5-6 NKJV“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.”
While nominal Christians profess to know Jesus, they do not allow Jesus to be the LORD of their lives. Jesus is LORD of Lords, and when Jesus becomes LORD of your life, it means that He becomes the master of your life. When Jesus becomes LORD of your life is also means that He has full authority to direct and guide you so that you may bear good fruits and godly works. The only way that we can abide in Jesus is by giving Him Lordship over our lives. A nominal Christian will however still maintain lordship over his own life instead of allowing Jesus to truly be Lord over his/her life and decisions. It is important to note in John 15:6 that Jesus mentions that at some point – most likely on judgement day, the nominal Christian who does not abide in Jesus will be “cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned”. This means that the judgement of a nominal Christian will be similar to that of an unbeliever.

(5) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Love Worldly Pleasures – Romans 12:2 NKJVAnd do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
When we become true born again Christians, God does not want the teachings and values of the world to negatively influence our relationship with Him. God does not want us to conform to the standards and philosophies of this world. God wants our worldview and our lifestyle to be different from the worldview and lifestyle that the world offers. Nominal Christians however love the world and its pleasures they will continue to allow worldly standards and worldly influences to impact their lives and decisions. In Matthew 13:1-9 and Matthew 13:18-23, Jesus talks about the parable of the sower. In His parable, about the seed that fell among thorns, Jesus explains the following in Matthew 13:14 : “Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.” Therefore according to Jesus’ parable, the nominal Christian hears the word of God, but he is unfruitful because he/she is very much a friend of the world. However, God also tells us in James 4:4 that we should not be friends with the world. The lifestyle and spiritual values of a Christian are very different from the world’s values. It can therefore be very difficult to tell the difference between a worldly person / unbeliever and a nominal Christian – why? – because the nominal Christian is a Christian by name only.

(6) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Do Not Bear Godly Fruit – Matthew 7:15-20 NKJV“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn-bushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”
The nominal Christian does not demonstrate the character of Jesus. To be Christian also means to be “like Jesus”. When we become Christians, Jesus wants us to imitate Him in many different ways. One of the reasons why He came to earth was to teach us and set an example for us as to who we should live, treat others and relate with God. When we become born again Christians our conduct and behavior must encourage others to believe in Christ.
The nominal Christian will however give Christianity a bad name by his/her conduct which will be contrary to the word of God. In Matthew 7:19, the judgment that will come upon the false prophet or nominal Christian is a judgment that is similar to an unbeliever, because a nominal Christian is not a true genuine Christian.

(7) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but Appear Righteous Outwardly Only – Matthew 23:27-28 NKJV“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
The Pharisees had studied the law. They were religious leaders. They were respected by people and in society. They prayed and read the law frequently. However, they were more focused on appearing righteous and godly to men yet in secret or inwardly they were unrighteous and wicked. The nominal Christian loves the praise of men and works in order to be noticed by people for the religious activities that they perform. In Matthew 6:1-7, Jesus warned us not to be like the hypocrites who do various religious and charitable activities just so that they can be noticed and praised by men (and not by God).
It is important to know that God looks at the heart and not at the outward appearance of whatever we do (Jeremiah 17:9, 10). Men might judge according to outward appearance, but only God knows the deepest inner thoughts of our heart. God is interested in our inner motives more than our outward actions. Therefore whatever we do in word or deed, we must do it to the glory of God only (Colossians 3:17).

(8) Nominal Christians Are Religious, but They Do Not Apply Both Faith & Works – James 2:14-15 NKJVWhat does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
An intellectual belief in the existence of God is not enough for true salvation. We also have to apply our beliefs about God into action. The scriptures say that even the demons believe in God (James 2:19), however it does not mean that demons will repent just because they believe in God. Repentance is therefore key to change. Jesus’ message was a message of repentance or change so that we live our lives according to God’s values and not our own. Therefore whatever we believe about God that is reflected in the scriptures, we must apply in our own lives for His glory. The nominal Christian however will profess belief in God, but will not repent not put into action the deeds that prove that he/she believes. James 2:15-17 NKJV – If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This means that we have all broken God’s laws and God’s 10 Commandments like those mentioned in Exodus 20:1-17. For example, if you have told a lie; if you have stolen something; if you have lusted after somebody or if you have coveted. This means you are guilty of breaking at least one or more of God’s 10 Commandments. Breaking God’s commandments makes us sinners. The fact that we are sinners who have broken God’s law means that we are accountable to God who is the Lawgiver. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner who has broken God’s commandments and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
