9 Myths About Christianity

When we look at ourselves, other people, societies or even God, we all sometimes form our own perceptions and views. However our personal perceptions are never always correct / accurate especially when our perception is compared with the real truth. Myths or false perceptions can sometimes be very dangerous. For example, for centuries there have been many myths about Christianity which have existed, to the extent that these myths or false perceptions have caused people to take extreme measures against Christians through acts of persecuting & killing of many Christians. Below is an attempt to look at a few of the myths about Christians & Christianity and to address what the Bible actually says about such myths.

MYTH 1: A Person Becomes A Christian Due To Certain Affiliations

A person does not automatically become a Christian just because he was born in a church-going family. Neither is being baptized as a baby or being born in a Christian country or having a Christian name automatically make one a Biblical born again Christian. Being part of a particular church denomination or church affiliation does not automatically make a person a Christian.
John 1:12-13 ESVBut to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 3:3-7 ESVJesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.   7  Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

MYTH 2: A Christian Is Saved By His Personal Ability & Effort. If Our Personal Good Works Outweigh Our Bad Works We Will Go To Heaven
Every person is a sinner in God’s eyes. According to God there is nobody who is righteous before Him (Romans 3:10As it is written: None is righteous, no, not one) and (Romans 3:23For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God) Therefore because of our sins and because we are sinners we cannot save ourselves from God’s punishment. We instead need a Saviour to save us from God’s eternal punishment. That Saviour is Jesus Christ. Therefore Christians are not saved by personal effort or by intelligent ability, but Christians are saved because of the what Jesus did for the world on the cross through God’s love and grace.
Ephesians 2:8-9 ESVFor by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
John 3:16-17 ESVFor God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.

MYTH 3: The Christian Life Is About Health, Wealth & Luxuries
The continued rise of the false teachings of the prosperity gospel and word of faith movement have attempted to distort the real meaning and essence of true Biblical Christianity and what is means to be a Biblical born again Christian. Many times Jesus spoke against the pursuit of monetary riches and instead encouraged His followers to seek God’s kingdom first and to seek after the things in Heaven which do not perish. Jesus also told His followers that they should be prepared to forsake every worldly pleasure or desire and take up their cross and follow Him. Therefore having money or various forms of assets and luxuries is not an indication of whether a person is a Christian or of their spiritual faith and maturity.
Luke 12:15-21 NKJV – And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Matthew 6:24 ESV – No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Matthew 6:19-21 ESVDo not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also

MYTH 4: The Christian Life Is Easy, Happy-Clappy & Free From Serious Problems & Challenges
A person’s problems do not end when he/she becomes a Christian. However, through Christ these problems can be overcome and Christ is able to still give you strength, peace and joy even in the midst of a bad situation. (John 16:33 ESVI have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world).
It’s important to note that God’s people throughout scripture, throughout history and even in this present day continue to face problems, challenges and persecutions because of their Christian faith and belief in God. Therefore Christians are not exempt from tribulation and the Christian walk is challenging but it is nevertheless worthwhile because of its eternal benefits in Christ Jesus.
Matthew 7:13-14 ESVEnter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.  14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
John 15:18-21 ESVIf the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you.  19  If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.  20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours.  21 But all these things they will do to you on account of My name, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
James 1:2-4 ESVCount it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

MYTH 5: Christianity Is About Following A Set Of Rules or Do’s & Don’ts
Christianity is a lifestyle. It is a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It is a loving relationship between God and man. Christianity is more than following a rule book. The Bible is not just a rule book. It is God’s word; God’s story; God’s message to anyone who is willing to listen, learn and obey (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESVAll Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work).
John 14:6-7 ESVJesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  7  If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
John 14:23-24 ESVJesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.  24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
John 15:13-17 ESVGreater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.  14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.  15  No longer do I call you servants, for the servant  does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.  16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.  17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

MYTH 6: Christianity Is Out of Touch & Out of Date With The Modern World
The argument is that Christians cling to a set of values that date back more than 2000 years ago and that such old values do not apply to modern 21st century thinking and culture. The rise of liberal thinking and gay rights for example are a few examples which are used to demonstrate that while the world is changing and tolerant, the Christian faith remains out of touch and intolerant on many moral issues. The truth is – God does not change and God’s moral values do not change. God’s word and values apply to any year; any century and any lifetime.
Romans 12:2 ESVDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Hebrews 13:8-9 ESVJesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. FI-B-myth
MYTH 7: The Christian Faith Is Oppressive To People’s Freedoms
God’s word and values are never meant to bring about oppression and bondage. In fact, it is a life of sin that will eventually bring bondage and condemnation to one’s life. The truth of God’s word is however meant to set you free from sin through Christ Jesus. God is able to set people free from the bondages of depression, drug addiction, porn addiction, hatred, jealousy and all sorts of sins that we have difficulty overcoming. When you have a relationship with God, you will find fulfillment, direction and meaning to your life.
John 8:31-32 ESVSo Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,  32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:36 ESVSo if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 10:10 ESVThe thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

MYTH 8: Christianity Is A Kill-Joy
The perception is that if a person becomes a Christian, he/she will no longer have to enjoy life because Christianity is perceived as having a set of rules which will kill the joy and fun out of life. So is Christianity a killjoy? Well the answer depends with what kind of things or activities you perceive as fun and joy. If your idea of a good time is getting drunk; taking drugs; fornicating; watching pornography and the like, then such activities do not agree with the Christian lifestyle. However, non of these activities can be considered to bring about true lasting and meaningful happiness and joy. Such activities are a temporary high which only feed the flesh but never constructively build you as a person. Such activities are what the Bible calls “the pleasures of sin”. Sin indeed is pleasurable but only for a short while and with very devastating consequences in the long term. While Christianity teaches us to subdue our fleshly desires, Christianity however offers true joy found through Christ and it offers a meaningful life when you have a relationship with God your Creator.
Romans 8:5-8 ESVFor those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Galatians 5:16-24 ESVBut I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

MYTH 9: Christians Dislike Anybody Who Disagrees With Them
Christians have been accused of being homophobic, anti-abortion and the like. The truth is real Christians are not taught to hate anybody. Christians are commanded to love their neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40 ESVAnd he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  38 This is the great and first commandment.  39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself). However, this does not mean that a Christian must be tolerant of a person’s sin or sinful lifestyle. In fact, it is out of love that a Christian speaks against homosexuality or abortion for example. Christians are taught to love the sinner but hate the sin.
Romans 12:9 ESV Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good
2 Timothy 4:2-5 ESVPreach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3  For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to
follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God

Why Not Make Your Eternal Decision NOW?

We become born again Christians by GRACE through FAITH or TOTAL TRUST in Jesus Christ as our Lord & Savior (Galatians 3:26) & (Ephesians 2:8,9). Salvation is a FREE gift received through FAITH in Christ.

This prayer is only an EXPRESSION of your faith, belief & trust in Jesus. Salvation is by FAITH or BELIEVING in Christ Jesus as your Lord & Saviour.

“Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your love. I thank You that You died on the cross for me and resurrected so that I may have life through You.
I confess Lord that I have sinned against You and today I ask You to forgive me of all of my sins, past present and future.
I repent of all of my sins and I ask You to cleanse me Jesus.
Thank You for forgiving my sins.
From this moment, come into my life Lord Jesus & take full control of my life. I want to follow You Jesus and I want to follow Your ways. Save me and from today, make me the person You want me to be.
I receive You Lord Jesus right now by faith. I make You my Lord and Savior – Amen”

How Can A Loving God Send People to Hell?

Many people have often wondered: If God is so loving, how can he send people to a horrible place like hell? This question could be answered in the following way:

Think of a person whom you love very dearly. It could be your wife, your child, your husband or even your best friend. Then one day you discover that a serial killer broke into your loved one’s home during the night and then raped your loved one and then killed her before escaping. Such an inhumane and disturbing crime committed to your loved one by this murderer would obviously grieve and horrify you I’m sure. However, after several investigations into this heinous crime, the police capture this serial killer and the killer is brought before the judge for sentencing. Before the judge’s sentencing it was discovered through evidence that the killer is unrepentant of his crimes and even scoffs at the law. How would you want this judge to sentence the rapist/murderer who committed this crime against your loved one?

Which of the options would you expect the judge to take? Would you want the judge to:

a)      Give this killer the just sentence he deserves and sentence the killer to jail according to the full requirements of the law? OR

b)      Allow this killer to go free; to immediately go back into society and not be punished for the heinous crimes he has committed against not only your loved one, but perhaps against many other people who also lost their loved ones as a result of this killer’s crimes?

Let’s just assume this judge does Option B and decides to allow this serial killer to go scot free and not be punished at all. As a person who lost his loved one because of the crime of this killer,

1)      How would you feel about this judge or this judge’s sentencing?

2)      Would you feel that the judge is a righteous, just and loving judge for allowing this unrepentant killer go free?

3)      Would you feel that there ought to be more judge’s like him/her who allow every or any criminal to be set free irrespective of their crimes; irrespective of the fact that they mocked the laws; irrespective that they were unrepentant; and irrespective that they had no regard for the authority in the land because these criminals believed that they should be allowed to do as they please?

I’m sure you would agree, that it would be a very suspicious and troubling scenario if the judge executed Option B. The judge’s ethics, morality and understanding of the law would be questioned given the crime. Because if a just judge is to judge the crime, then he would make sure that the time would fit the crime.

So, how can a loving God send people to hell? To further and fully understand the answer to this type of question, we also need to understand the following 5 issues:

1)      WHAT IS GOD’s NATURE?

a)      God is Love – 1 John 4:16-17 ESV – So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

b)      God is Just & Righteous – Psalms 7:11-12 ESV – God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day. 12 If a man does not repent, God will whet His sword; He has bent and readied his bow;

c)       God is Holy – 1 Peter 1:16 ESV – Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy”.

d)      God is Forgiving – 1 John 1:9 ESV – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

e)      God wants EVERYBODY to Repent and NOT Perish – 2 Peter 3:9 ESV – The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

f)       God chooses to be gracious and merciful according to His will – Exodus 33:19-20 ESV – And he said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you My name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”

2)      WHAT IS SIN, AND HOW DOES GOD FEEL ABOUT SIN?

a)      God sees sin as being a crime against His law and His principles. Therefore in God’s eyes, sins are like crimes that cannot be allowed to go unpunished.

Proverbs 11:21 ESV – Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered

b)      Sin can basically be defined as any type of wrongdoing against God. In other words, if God says that a certain behavior, thought pattern or lifestyle is wrong or bad, then that behavior or lifestyle can be defined as being a sin. Sin cannot be defined through the eyes of the world or by the world standards and systems. Sin can only be defined through God’s eyes and by God Himself.

c)       Everybody is a sinner and is guilty of sin. Nobody is inherently good and all of mankind is capable of sin no matter how big or how small we may think our sins are.

1 John 1:10 ESV – If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Romans 3:10 ESV – As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;”

Romans 3:23 ESV – For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

d)      Sin has the detrimental effect of causing a spiritual separation between God and man. Therefore sin causes rebellion against God and if allowed to rule in a person’s life – without true repentance – sin will prevent a genuine and saving relationship with God.

Isaiah 59:2 ESV – But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that He does not hear.

3)      WHAT IS GOD’s SOLUTION FOR SIN?

a)      Since God desires that EVERYBODY would repent and NOT perish according to 2 Peter 3:9, God’s solution for the problem of sin is to save mankind from the punishment of ETERNAL HELL through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

John 3:16-17 ESV –  For God so loved the world,  that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.

b)      Because EVERY person is a sinner and is guilty of sin, therefore every person should be punished. However, by God’s love, grace and mercy, He sent Jesus who was sinless, to take our punishment as a sacrifice for our sins in place of us. Jesus came to take the punishment for our crimes against God. Therefore Christ died in our place as our substitute. The price of our redemption had to be the shedding of Christ’s blood on the cross.

Hebrews 9:22 ESV – Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

John 1:29-30 ESV – The next day he (John) saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV – For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 Peter 3:18 ESV – For Christ also suffered  once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

4)      WHAT ARE GOD’s CONDITIONS FOR SALVATION FROM HELL?

God’s offer of salvation is FREE. You don’t have to pay any pastor any money for it. You are not saved by your own good works, but you are saved by God’s grace or undeserved kindness. Therefore in order to be saved, you must

a)      You must ACKNOWLEDGE: You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”

Luke 18:13 – “God be merciful to me a sinner”

b)      You must REPENT: Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action; Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to follow Him.

Luke 13:3 – “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish”

Acts 3:19 – “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out”

c)       You must CONFESS: God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

Romans 10:9 – “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”

d)      You must BELIEVE: You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God.You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.

John 1:12-13 – But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God

e)      You must RECEIVE: By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Saviour and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God; you are saved from eternal hell.

John 1:11-13 – He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

5)      WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCE FOR REFUSING GOD’s SALVATION PLAN

So how can a loving God send people to hell?

a)      If we make the choice of refusing to receive God’s FREE offer of salvation through Jesus Christ we are in fact refusing to be aligned with God.

b)      If we make the choice that we do not need God or the Lordship of Christ Jesus in our life, we automatically condemn ourselves.

c)       If we mock God and mock His word and scoff at God’s loving act of sending Jesus for our sake, to become our substitute, we are in fact refusing to be part of God’s salvation plan.

d)      If we make the conscious choice to not believe in God’s existence and to not follow or believe that His word gives us moral and spiritual guidance then we risk taking the path that leads to eternal damnation if we do not repent.

e)      If we refuse to repent but instead continue to be led by the standards of this world and false doctrines, we might risk the chance of leaving no room for the one true God to save us from eternal hell.

f)       If we do not believe and receive Jesus Christ as our Lord & Saviour we become condemned already. However if we receive Jesus Christ as Lord & Saviour we become a new creation who will not be condemned to hell – but instead we will receive the free gift of eternal life and reside in the eternal presence of the Lord.

Romans 6:23 ESV – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 3:17-21 ESV – For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.  18  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.  19  And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.  20  For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God.

Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV – For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

2 Corinthians 5:17-19 ESV – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

Revelations 21:6-8 ESV – And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7  The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8  But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Romans 1:18-32 ESV – For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened

Conclusion

The truth is this: People send THEMSELVES to hell by the rebellious choices they make against God and by not heeding to God’s warnings and not committing to God’s FREE plan for salvation through Jesus Christ.

Just because we decide to believe in our mind that neither God nor hell exists, it does not mean that the TRUTH will change. Hell exists and it is eternal.

The GOOD NEWS is that God offers a way of escape from the punishment of hell through Christ Jesus.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHILD OF GOD? DO YOU WANT TO BE SAVED FROM ETERNAL HELL?

God exists. God loves you even if you are a sinner. Jesus died for ALL of us who have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). God also loves you even if you don’t believe in Him. However, if you really want to know what a person’s character is like – you have to get to know that person one-on-one. We cannot accurately judge a person unless we personally know him/her.

God wants to have a one-on-one relationship with you. God wants to show you how much He loves and cares for you. If you would like to know God and to have a personal relationship with Him you need to believe and ask Jesus Christ to become your Lord & Saviour.

What is True Repentance?

Matthew 4:17 ESV
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

One of the main themes of Jesus’ message was the message of repentance. The reason why Jesus preached about repenting was because He knew that if people are to have a true relationship with God and if people are to be true followers of God, then repentance is very important. A person cannot be a true follower of Christ or of God’s Kingdom unless he/she sincerely repents.
Therefore – what is repentance? What should we repent from? How do I know if I have repented? Why should I repent?

WHAT IS REPENTANCE?

  • Biblical repentance is sincere change. Repentance involves is a complete and sincere change from thinking, believing and doing that which was wrong and sinful in God’s eyes – to thinking, believing and doing that which is righteous and good to God.
  • Biblical repentance is not just intellectual or of the mind. It is also a change of attitude, a change of the perception, a change of direction – so that a person no longer walks in an ungodly direction but they walk in God’s direction pertaining to a given area in his/her life
  • Biblical repentance turns from the devil to Christ; from sin to good; from darkness to light; from deception to truth; from condemnation to salvation.
  • The fruit of sincere repentance are evident in the true believer’s behaviour or actions. Biblical repentance leads to a changed life or lifestyle.

Acts 26:20 ESV
But declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 ESV
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Matthew 3:8 ESV
Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

Luke 5:32 ESV
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

 JUDAS versus PETER on REPENTANCE

Matthew 27:3-5
Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” 5 And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.

Biblical repentance is more than just saying “I’m sorry”. Biblical repentance goes further than feeling remorse, but it requires deliberate change to not do the thing that you are sorry for doing.
Judas knew that he had sinned and felt remorse or sorry for having betrayed Jesus. However, Judas did not repent. If he had repented, he would not have tried to resolve his issue by committing another sin in the process; he would not have hung himself but would have found a way to return to Christ and thereafter follow Christ sincerely. Biblical repentance must lead you to reconcile with God.
In contrast, Peter who denied Jesus 3 times out of fear of persecution (read Mark 14:66-72), later felt sorry for having denied Christ, then Peter repented and later boldly and courageously spoke the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through out the book of Acts, Peter spoke boldly about Christ without fear of persecution. Therefore Peter’s repentance changed his behaviour from one of fear to that of courage. (Acts 4:13 – Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus)

FI3 - repent

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE REPENT FROM?

2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Biblical repentance requires that people repent from anything that displeases God. This for example includes the following:

  • All kinds of sin and sinful habits
  • All kinds of wickedness
  • Any type of poor or bad attitude
  • Anything that rejects God and rejects the nature of God

Galatians 5:19-24 ESV
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.

WHY SHOULD I REPENT?

1. Repentance leads to salvation. Let us remember that salvation is by grace and not by our own works. However we must understand that our decision to repent is evidence that we desire to receive God’s free gift of salvation through Christ Jesus. (Acts 2:36-39 – Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.)
When Peter preached his sermon at Pentecost, he wanted the people to change their mind about Jesus whom they had crucified. In other words, he wanted them to repent about their perception of Jesus and receive Him and accept Jesus as Lord and Christ in their life.
John MacArthur stated the following : “It has often been said that repentance and faith are two sides of the same coin. That coin is called conversion. Repentance turns from sin to Christ, and faith embraces Him as the only hope of salvation and righteousness. That is what conversion means in simple terms. Faith and repentance are distinct concepts, but they cannot occur independently of each other. Genuine repentance is always the flip side of faith; and true faith accompanies repentance”
(2 Peter 3:9 ESV – The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient  toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.)

2. Biblical Repentance leads to change in behavior & obedience to God. It is impossible to repent in one’s mind and this repentance not be followed by a change in action. In Luke 3:8 and Matthew 3:8 John the Baptist called people to repent and that there must be evidence of their repentance. John mentioned that people must “bear fruit in keeping with repentance” – an indication that sincere repentance leads to obedience and that repentance is more than just a mental or intellectual change. (Acts 26:20 ESV – But declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.)

3. Repentance leads to seeing life from God’s perspective and not from our own perspective. When we repent, it reflects that we are ready to deny our personal opinions; our personal philosophies; our personal agenda in order to follow the values and principles of God. Repentance from sin acknowledges that we are wrong and that God is ALWAYS right. Biblical repentance acknowledges that only God’s perspective is true and that we must align our thoughts and actions to God’s will and not our own will. (Acts 3:19 ESV Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out)

GOD FORGIVES

Whenever we sin, God is just and faithful to forgive us. We too must through Christ be faithful to not return to our sin, by repenting from wrong doing and endeavor to sincerely follow way of the Lord.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.

Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;

PLEASE NOTE: You can choose to pray in your own words. This prayer is a sample prayer and it is only an EXPRESSION of your faith, belief & trust in Jesus. Salvation is by GRACE through FAITH or BELIEVING in Christ Jesus as your Lord & Saviour.

I trust You as my Lord and Savior – Amen”

What Are Christians Saved From?

Romans 10:9,10,13 ESV
Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved … 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

What does it mean when somebody becomes biblically saved? What does Biblical salvation mean to the Christian and what are Christians saved from? Also – why is Biblical salvation important?

Biblical salvation is the means by which God provides redemption and deliverance from sin through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Biblical salvation is an act of God’s love and grace through Jesus Christ to provide man with eternal life and an eternal relationship with Him. Man cannot save himself, but only Jesus can save man because Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through” Him (John 14:6).

FI3 - saved

Therefore, when a person becomes a Christian, what is the Christian saved from and why is it important for all non-Christians / non-believers to be saved?

The Christian is saved from the following:

(1) ETERNITY IN HELL – (Revelation 21:8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”)
Life on this earth is temporary. However, the “second death” as mentioned in Revelations 21:8 is eternal separation from God where people who have not been saved will spend an eternity in hell. Therefore a Christian is saved from eternity in hell while the non-believer will spend eternity in hell upon death on this earth.
(Matthew 25:46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.“)

(2) THE POWER OF SIN IN ONE’S PERSONAL LIFE – (Romans 6:5-7For if we have been united with Him (Jesus) in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with Him (Jesus) in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.)
Christ Jesus has saved us from the power of sin over our lives and we are given strength and the ability to overcome sin through the Holy Spirit. The Christian’s character and nature should resemble that of Jesus and not of the worldly lusts and sinful passions. Sin no longer has dominion over the true born again Christian.
(Romans 6:12-14Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.)

(3) THE WORRIES & INFLUENCES OF THIS WORLD – (Philippians 4:6-7Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.)
The Christian is saved from such issues like anxieties, depression and the worries of the world for long as he/she is truly trusting in God. The peace of God is not necessarily the absence of problems or challenges, but the peace of God is an internal peace and tranquility in the midst of the problems. Therefore even though the Christian faces external problems, he is internally and spiritually confident in Christ that he will overcome the problems and he is not allowing such problems to negatively hurt him. The Christian continues to be governed by the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit.
(John 14:27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.)

(4) THE POWER OF THE DEVIL & THE DEMONIC – (Luke 10:19-20 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”)
The Christian is saved from demonic influences. For example, a Christian cannot be demon possessed. Instead a Christian has power in Christ Jesus to overcome demonic influences and attacks. The Christian is protected by God from the devils influences and God is able to provide a way out whenever we are tempted by the devil. (1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.)

(5) FROM THE WRATH & JUDGMENT OF GOD – (Romans 1:18-19For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.)
Sinful living does not please God and neither does He tolerate sin. A Christian is saved from facing God’s wrath and God’s judgment upon the unbelievers and those who would choose to live an ungodly life on earth. The non-believer will face condemnation while the Christian will not be condemned; therefore a Christian is saved from condemnation.
(John 3:18-20Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.)

GOD OFFERS SALVATION TO EVERY PERSON & NON-CHRISTIAN

2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
God offers salvation to EVERY person who has not yet become a Christian. It is God’s desire that EVERYONE should have eternal life and that EVERYONE spend eternity in Heaven with Him as long as we accept, believe, repent & receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Salvation is a CHOICE that a person must choose to want. To refuse the Biblical salvation that God offers through Christ Jesus is to choose eternity in hell (and the 4 other points mentioned above). But to choose salvation through Christ Jesus is to choose eternal life with God.

HOW TO BECOME A GENUINE CHRISTIAN
If you are not a Christian, and you want to become a born-again Christian, you can do so by confessing with your mouth and believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that He paid for all your sins and came to save you from the power of the enemy so that you may have an eternal everlasting relationship with Him.

Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

Wrong Reasons For Following Jesus

John 6:26-27
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

Have you ever had a “friend” or colleague who only wanted your companionship or friendship for as long as you had something to give them like money etc – but as soon as you no longer have the very thing that they want from you, then you hardly hear from them. Some people behave the same way towards God. They seek God for what He can do for them and not for who He is. These people don’t really want God – but they want what God can give them. These people don’t really seek to have a genuine & obedient relationship with God – but they seek a way to get God to “unlock” the “keys” to material wealth. They are really seeking the gift but not the Giver of the gift.
Just like the 5000 followers, it is possible today, that people follow a church or appear to follow Jesus not because they seek to become like Jesus and to serve God – but because, for example, they want various temporary material and monetary possessions that they believe God will give them. Like the 5000 who followed Jesus for food, there some who follow God for presumed money and wealth.
Just like the 5000 followers, the motive of some people is not to learn from God but their primary motivation is to feed their fleshly desires. To them Jesus is a means by which they can attempt to achieve their carnal desires.

In our own life, our motives for being followers of Christ must be CORRECT and GENUINE. We must not be like some of the 5000 who followed Jesus because they were only interested in satisfying their fleshly and temporary desires. God knows our minds and hearts and He is able to clearly see and read the motives or the reasons for why we do the things that we do. (John 2:23-25 – Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.)

Below are some of the WRONG reasons why people follow Jesus or go to church

WRONG REASONS FOR FOLLOWING A CHURCH OR FOLLOWING JESUS

(1) FOLLOWING GOD FOR MATERIAL THINGS(Luke 12:15 – And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”)
Some people view God as being a type of Santa Claus / Father Christmas. To certain people, the primary motive for following God is because they believe that He will give them what their flesh and carnal minds desire. The motivation to acquire riches and possessions blinds them from genuinely following God for the right reasons because they have been deceived into believing that God MUST grant them whatever they desire. However Jesus teaches that life is more than about what possessions we have or the amount of money we have and that if we seek after material things only then we are short-sighted and do not understand God’s eternal plan. Jesus also taught that our primary focus should be to seek God’s kingdom & righteousness FIRST. (John 6:27 – Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal). It is also important to realize that while God is Jehovah our Provider, it is God’s prerogative to either give us or to withhold giving us the material desires that we want. Therefore God is not obligated to give us what we want because He is not Santa Clause / Father Christmas. He is God.

(2) SEEKING AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE – (John 4:23-24 – But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.)
Some people go to church or follow Jesus because they are seeking an emotional experience. They seek an emotional “high” or they seek to be entertained. They judge their spiritual condition by their emotional feelings. Some people believe that if they have an emotional experience at church then it means that God has visited them or that they are growing spiritually. However, is following Jesus really about seeking an emotional experience? And is having an emotional experience no matter how temporary that emotional “high” might be – can such experiences be equivalent to true spiritual growth in a person’s life?
(Matthew 13:20-21 – As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with JOY, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away).
When Jesus spoke about the Parable of the Sower, he spoke of a type of people who hear God’s word and receive God’s word with JOY and with a lot of excitement and energy. However, the fact that they were joyful or excited at receiving God’s word was not enough to sustain their spiritual growth because the problem is that they were not firmly rooted in God’s word through meditation and OBEDIENCE to God’s word. An emotional experience or feelings do not automatically guarantee that one will obey God’s word. Therefore when trials, tests and challenges come, they backslide or become defeated.
The problem with going to church or seeking God because you want an emotional experience is that you will find yourself going through a cycle of unpredictability and inconsistency in regards to obedience to God’s word. Therefore your relationship with the Lord is based on feelings.

(3) FOR POSITION, POWER & RECOGNITION – (Mark 10:43-45 – But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many).
I have often seen, experienced and heard about situations where people may appear to be interested in following God and in doing the work of God, but yet their ulterior motive is to gain various positions of power and influence within the church so that they may fulfill their own personal agenda and not God’s work. The Pharisees sought the adoration and admiration of men. The Pharisees sought power and influence, and therefore when they discovered that the power and influence that they once had over the people was now shifting to Jesus, the Pharisees connived to kill Jesus (read Matthew 23-26:1-3)
Jesus Himself did not come be served, but He came to serve and fulfill the plan of the Father.
Therefore when we go to church or when we decide to follow Jesus, we must be prepared to give ALL the glory to God. We cannot claim to follow God but yet seek our own glory in the process because God does not share His glory with anybody. (Isaiah 42:8 – I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols).
Even if you do not have a position or recognition in church, you are still a vessel of God whose function is to glorify God all the time (Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.)
Our duty as Christians is not to seek self-glory or the admiration of others, but whatever we do must give glory and praise to God whom we serve and live for.

(4) FOR BUSINESS, MONEY & PROFIT – (Matthew 21:12-13 – And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.)
For some people, going to church is an opportunity to make business contacts; make money and to make a profitable business out of the church setting & environment. For some people, church has become a business market – and for these people, they may appear to follow Jesus – but they are actually following and serving mammon (money).
When Jesus entered the temple, He realized that people had lost the true meaning & purpose of the existence of the temple. The temple had not been built so that people could run their businesses and make money. The temple had not been built so that it could be a marketplace for people to sell and buy. The temple was supposed to be “a house of prayer”. The temple was supposed to be a place for man to communicate with God. The temple was supposed to be for the service and glorification of God and not for the advancement of people’s monetary or material wealth. (Matthew 6:24 – “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.)

(5) FOR SIGNS & WONDERS – (Matthew 12:38-39 – Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah)
If God does not perform a miracle or a healing in one’s life – it does not mean that He is not God. God is still God even if He does not heal. God is still God even if He does not perform any physical sign or wonder. God is still God even if He does not give us the things that we want and desire in life.
There is no doubt that Jesus performed miracles that nobody had ever witnessed. After all, Jesus is God and through Him all things were created. Jesus would heal the sick, open the eyes of the blind and even bring back to life those who were dead. However, not even miracles could sway the hearts of many including the Pharisees to believe and genuinely follow Jesus. The Pharisees, the Sadducees and many other people who would follow Jesus would witness the miracles He did but in the end some of them would still not genuinely seek Christ’s salvation or devote themselves to become His disciples. This example of the hardening of the heart by the Pharisees even after seeing miracles by Jesus clearly shows that signs and wonders alone do not guarantee one’s salvation nor can they be a primary reason for following a church.
(Matthew 24:24 – For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect). In Matthew 24:24 Jesus warns that false christs & false prophets will perform false miracles or signs & wonders in order to deceive people and lure people to follow after them.
Therefore if people go to church or attempt to seek Jesus because they seek miracles only, they must be careful that they don’t fall into the trap of false prophets and false christs because according to Jesus, it is by false signs & wonders that many people would be led astray.
God is not a magician. He is not an entertainer. God can choose to perform miracles or not to. Jesus did not perform a sign when the scribes & Pharisees asked Him to. Jesus did not have to prove Himself to them even though they sought Jesus for a sign.

God wants us to seek Him genuinely. He wants us to worship Him truthfully. Below are  GOOD Reasons or GOOD Motives of Why We Should Follow Jesus.

FI3 - thirsty

10 GOOD REASONS WHY WE SHOULD FOLLOW JESUS

1. Because we love Him. If you love somebody you will want to do the things that please them – (John 14:15 – If you love Me, you will keep my commandments).

2. Because we want to serve Him above all things – (Matthew 16:24-26 – Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life?)

3. Because we desire to learn from Him – Of the 5000 followers, many of them decided to no longer follow Jesus. However, disciples such as Peter remained with Christ because they knew that only Jesus could really teach them the truth about life. (John 6:66-69 – After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”)

4. Because we desire to obey Him – (Luke 6:46-49 – “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”)

5. Because we want to glorify and praise Him above everything – (1 Peter 4:11 – Whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.)

6. Because He is our Lord & Saviour – (Acts 4:12 – And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.)

7. Because He is the Way the Truth & the Life – (John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.)

8. Because only He can satisfy our every need – Contrary to the teachings of various “prosperity” teachers, God’s mandate is not to supply us with every material need, but however He does supply us with every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 1:3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places) and (John 6:35 – Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst)

9. Because we would rather have Jesus and follow the Lord rather than to have what the world offers – (Romans 12:1-2 – I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect). (Matthew 16:26-27 – For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.)

10. Because we desire to yield to the teaching & direction of the Holy Spirit so that we follow and genuinely obey God in our lives – (John 16:8-15 – And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.)

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This means that we have all broken God’s laws and God’s 10 Commandments like those mentioned in Exodus 20:1-17. For example, if you have told a lie; if you have stolen something; if you have lusted after somebody or if you have coveted. This means you are guilty of breaking at least one or more of God’s 10 Commandments. Breaking God’s commandments makes us sinners. The fact that we are sinners who have broken God’s law means that we are accountable to God who is the Lawgiver. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner who has broken God’s commandments and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.
