Why Should I Believe in God?

Is there a God? How do we know a God exists, and why should we believe in Him? Is there evidence to prove that the universe did not exist by chance?

Below are 6 reasons why it’s important to believe in God

1. Most scientists agree that the universe had a beginning. The universe did not simply appear from nothing. In fact, science agrees with the Bible that the universe had a beginning.

Therefore if the universe and all that is in it had a beginning, then the logical conclusion is that there is a First Cause.

The Bible tells us the identity of the First Cause. Genesis 1:1 says: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2. Design implies a Designer. Life exists because there is a life-giver. If we observe something as complex as DNA, we would realize that our DNA code is the result of the work of an Intelligent Designer.

DNA is a language and information storage system which has vast amounts of information encoded in each and every living cell. It’s also important to note that all types of codes and all types of languages are designed or created by a conscious intelligent mind.
DNA code can be liked to an incredibly advanced software program that is found in every living cell. Therefore DNA could not have arisen by accidental, mindless chance. Information requires intelligence and design requires a designer.

Nobody finds a laptop or cellphone and assumes that these gadgets and the software installed in them was created from nothing or by accident. Instead we logically conclude that both the hardware and the software of these gadgets were designed by an intelligent person.
Sometimes we may not personally know the exact identity of the software programmer or the maker of the hardware, but we know through logic that the laptop or cellphone did not exist from nothing or by chance.
Therefore all of creation is evidence that a Creator exists.

Romans 1:19-20 NLT says: They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

3. Moral Laws imply a Lawgiver. In James 4:12 says that there is only one Lawgiver and one Judge and that’s God.

We are all born with internal moral laws given to us by God. So whether religious, atheist or agnostic, we have all done things in our life that we know are morally wrong because our conscience judges us.
The Bible says that God has written His moral law in our hearts.

Romans 2:15 says: They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

The moral laws are found in the Ten Commandments. For example, even a child knows that it is wrong to steal. Furthermore one does not need to be religious to know that it is wrong to commit adultery or to tell lies because God Himself has written His moral commandments in our hearts.

4. The Order & Laws of Nature imply a Creator. The laws of physics and the laws of chemistry give evidence of a Designer more intelligent than any human.

The universe operates by uniform laws of nature. Many times we witness a general order in nature. For example, we can count on the rotation of the earth every 24 hours. We can count on the laws of gravity remaining consistent. We can count on the earth being sustained in its exact position from the sun.
Job 26:7 says that God “hangs the earth on nothing”

Ecclesiastes 1:5 says “The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.”

Logically we cannot observe nature from the workings and functions of the sun, the stars, the planets and all of life on Earth and presume that all that we physically see was an accident.

In Isaiah 45:12 NLT God says: “I am the One who made the earth and created people to live on it. With My hands I stretched out the heavens. All the stars are at My command.”

The fact that we cannot fully understand all of nature and the workings of the universe should reveal to us that we live at the mercy of a Being who is more intelligent and more superior than any human being.

5. Only God can address the Problem of Evil. Many atheists and agnostics have claimed that they cannot believe in a God who allows so much evil in the world. The fact that we seek justice in this world is evidence that humans are not like the animals. Though not perfect, humans are moral beings who have an inbuilt moral compass or conscience.

Every normal thinking human being seeks a system where there is goodness, justice, love and fulfillment. So as humans we desire that evil, wickedness and unfair practices be addressed.

However we live in a fallen world where every human being has the propensity to act unrighteously or wickedly.

Romans 3:10-11 says: As it is written “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.”

Ironically atheists will sometimes blame God for all the evil in the world. They ask how God would allow evil but forget that it is not God who is responsible for evil, but it is humanity itself that is responsible for all the evil in the world.
When we lie to one another; when we murder each other; when we steal from one another; even when we commit adultery, humanity is responsible for evil because of our sinful acts. God does not tempt anyone to perform evil but we do it all by ourselves.

Everyday many people get away with murder, corruption, sexual misconduct, stealing and might never get caught or encounter justice on earth. However whether we live or die, the problem of evil can only be addressed by God. He is the Creator of the universe and the Creator of humanity. God will ultimately judge all of mankind and He will judge righteously and fairly.

Psalms 58:11 says: Mankind will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.”

Psalms 9:7-8 says: But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. 8 He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness.

6. Only God can address your Purpose in life. Without a relationship with our Creator we cannot know the meaning of life nor our purpose in life. It is only our Maker who can give us purpose.

Psalms 57:2 NLT says: I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.

In Jeremiah 33:3 God says: “Call to Me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

True purpose and meaning in life can only be discovered when we seek the true living God. It is through a relationship with our Creator that we see the value of life in general. In other words when we truly know God, it will have a direct impact on how we live.
For example, a genuine and intimate relationship with God will cause us to love God and love others; it will cause us to understand that the things of this world are temporary and therefore we must focus on the things of God that are eternal.

In John 17:3 Jesus says “And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

Therefore our universal purpose in life as humanity must be to intimately know God and to know Jesus Christ who was crucified on the Cross to pay for our sins. It is only through Christ that we can experience eternal life and enjoy the privilege of spending eternity with our God and Creator.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST?

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This means that we have all broken God’s laws and God’s 10 Commandments like those mentioned in Exodus 20:1-17. For example, if you have told a lie; if you have stolen something; if you have lusted after somebody or if you have coveted. This means you are guilty of breaking at least one or more of God’s 10 Commandments. Breaking God’s commandments makes us sinners. The fact that we are sinners who have broken God’s law means that we are accountable to God who is the Lawgiver. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner who has broken God’s commandments and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to change your mind about sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
Through faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God
