6 Things the Devil Hates
Humanity is involved in a spiritual battle. In this spiritual warfare the archenemy is the devil whom the Bible says “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
In any type of warfare it is important to know and understand the nature of your enemy. For example, it is important to know the strengths, the weaknesses and the motivations of your enemy.
2 Corinthians 2:11 says that we must not be ignorant of the devil’s devices or schemes. Therefore we should not allow satan to outsmart us or deceive us.
One of the ways we can understand the devil’s schemes and devices is by understanding what satan hates.
Below are 6 things that the devil hates
1. The devil hates God
God represents and embodies everything that is good, truthful, holy, loving and righteous (Galatians 5:22-23). God cannot sin and nor can He be tempted (James 1:13; Numbers 23:19).
However satan is the complete opposite in terms of his nature and character. The devil hates anything that reminds him about God. The devil hates anything that is good, pure, holy and righteous because such qualities ultimately point to God as the source. Instead the devil’s nature is one that is totally consumed with lies, pride, hatred, and evil.
So where God seeks to build and create life, the devil seeks to steal kills and destroy the things of God.
In John 10:10 Jesus says: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
The devil also hates Christ because Jesus has the name that is above all names (Philippians 2:9). So the devil does not like to see Jesus Christ being exalted. Instead satan attempts to steal worship away from God.
2. The devil hates Humanity
The devil hates all of God’s creation, especially humanity. The devil is responsible for tempting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-24). The consequence of succumbing to satan’s temptation in the Garden of Eden resulted in the fallen, evil and imperfect world that we see and experience today.
Therefore the devil’s motive in tempting Adam and Eve was the destruction of humanity and creation because of the sin of Adam, the first human. The reason why we experience problems such as diseases, death, evil, natural disasters, injustice and many other issues in this world is because of the impact of sin due to the first temptation brought before man in the Garden of Eden.
Sin ultimately results in death. Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death, which is spiritual separation from God or eternal punishment.
Furthermore, the devil’s ultimate motive is that he wants as many people as possible to join him in hell on judgment day. So the devil hates humanity and he wants anyone who has embraced sin to suffer together with him in hell.
Revelation 20:10,15 says: And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever… 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 21:8 says: But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.
3. The devil hates Families
The devil knows that one of the ways to destroy society is by opposing God’s original plan and purpose for sex, marriage, gender and family.
Just like Sodom and Gomorrah we live in a world that has increasingly embraced the doctrines of the devil regarding abortion, sexual sin, homosexuality, transgenderism, same-sex marriages and all other forms of LGBT ideology.
Sexual immorality that reaches the level of wickedness and depravity of Sodom and Gomorrah are one of the telling signs that society and morality is on the brink of collapse.
Therefore the devil promotes, tempts and encourages the very immoral behaviors that God hates.
God hates sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3). God says that homosexuality is wrong (Leviticus 18:2; Jude 1:7). God hates to witness children being indoctrinated into sins that include sexual immorality and the LGBTQ agenda (Matthew 18:6).
God says that marriage is between two genders only, a male and a female, who shall become one flesh
In Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus says: “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
4. The devil hates The Bible
The Bible is where we find the mind of God. The Bible reveals God’s perfect standard for righteous and holy living. The Bible itself is God’s written book to all of humanity.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
The devil also hates the Bible because God’s word is the sword of the Spirit for the Christian believer (Ephesians 6:17).
For example, in every temptation that Jesus faced against satan, Christ would use the Scriptures to overcome each temptation from the devil (Matthew 4:1-11).
Hebrews 4:12 says: For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
So the devil hates the Bible because it is God’s instrument for revealing His truth and His doctrines. The Bible is also God’s supernatural weapon or sword against the satanic forces of evil.
5. The devil hates the Gospel of Salvation
Romans 1:16 says that the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. This means that the Gospel message is what enables us to understand our fallen sinful nature and the good news that Christ offers redemption to anyone who believes and receives Him through faith because of the penalty He paid for our sins.
However the devil hates the true Gospel because he does not want people to be saved. Instead the devil has manufactured counterfeit gospels to lead people astray so that they do not get saved.
Examples of such false gospels are: universalism, salvation by works, antinomianism, prosperity gospel heresy and many other false theologies that that distort or oppose the true character of Christ and the true purpose of why He died on the cross.
2 Corinthians 4:4 says that the devil who is “the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ”.
Therefore the devil hates the true gospel and he will do anything to blind people from understanding and embracing the gospel of Christ so that they may be freely and truly saved.
6. The devil hates true Christian Believers
For centuries Christianity has faced persecution in different forms. The world with its secular values and doctrines is at enmity with the things of God. The world has opposing doctrines and value systems because of man’s sinful & rebellious nature and also because of the influence of the devil and his demons.
James 4:4 says that “friendship with the world is enmity with God”. Romans 12:2 says that we should not conform to the standards of this world.
In John 15:18-19 Jesus says: “If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”
Therefore the devil and the world hate Christianity and the godly values promoted in the Bible. The devil hates Christians because Christ is working in them and through them. Christians do not belong to the world, but instead they’re ambassadors and citizens of Heaven and not of the world.
Conclusion
Ephesians 6:12 says we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Therefore humanity is in a battle against a very real and dangerous enemy that is filled with evil, hatred and deceit.
Our hope and faith is in Jesus Christ who defeated satan at the cross. Through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the gift of salvation is freely available to anyone who believes and receives Christ as Lord and Savior.
We are all sinners before a just and holy God (Romans 3:23). We have all broken God’s Ten Commandments and therefore deserve to be punished. We cannot pay the penalty for our sins by our own personal works. However thankfully God loves us so much that He sent Jesus Christ to pay for our sins on the cross. Through Christ’s sacrifice and the blood He shed on the cross, our eternal debt for sin was paid by Jesus. Therefore salvation and eternal life is available as a free gift by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-10 says: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Victory over the enemy and his schemes is only possible through Jesus Christ alone.
