Should humans create an AI god?
Could artificial intelligence (AI) become a digital god in the world today? Does humanity need a new Bible written and generated by artificial intelligence (AI)? Is it possible to create an AI system that could understand everything in the world so that it creates its own moral value systems for humanity to obey? What are the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI)?
What does the Bible say about humanity creating an AI god?
In 2015 former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski formed an AI worshiping religious sect called Way of the Future. The aim of this religious sect was to form a new religion whose goal was to create a deity based on artificial intelligence for the betterment of society.
The ultimate objective of Way of the Future was to promote “the realization, acceptance, and worship of a Godhead based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) developed through computer hardware and software.”
Israeli futurist and World Economic Forum (WEF) speaker, Yuval Noah Harari believes that AI should create a new religion with moral value systems that supposedly surpass the Bible or Christianity. So Harari promotes the concept of embracing artificial intelligence as an all-knowing authority which humanity must obey and follow for both social and spiritual issues.
In May 2023 Harari was quoted as saying “A.I. can create new ideas; {it} can even write a new Bible,”
Harari also said, “In a few years, there might be religions that are actually correct… Just think about a religion whose holy book is written by an AI. That could be a reality in a few years.”
Then in June 2023 at a Lutheran church in Germany, a unique church service and sermon was conducted via artificial intelligence. An artificial intelligence ChatGPT chatbot, personified by an avatar of a bearded black man on a huge screen above the altar, asked people to rise from the pews and praise the Lord. The AI chatbot then later preached its message to more than 300 congregants. The 40 minute church service was almost entirely generated by AI with the assistance of Jonas Simmerlein, a theologian and philosopher from the University of Vienna, who said 98 percent of it came from the machine.
So it is evident from the above examples, there exists an ideology and objective in the secular world to promote artificial intelligence (AI) in literally every aspect of a person’s life including social, moral and spiritual issues.
Humanity intends to submit and seek moral and spiritual guidance from the very machines and software that humanity itself has created.
Since the sin of Adam in the Garden of Eden, humanity has been seeking to either become a god, or create his own man-made gods.
However in this modern age, humanity intends to create a new god – an AI digital god.
An AI god versus the one true God
There is no doubt, there are some advantages and benefits of using artificial intelligence. For example, AI could improve work or job efficiency and productivity, but AI could cause millions of job losses. AI could make it convenient to complete simple and complicated tasks, but it may cause humanity to become lazy, docile and too dependent on technology.
If not regulated properly, AI will have some detrimental effects on humanity. The greatest concern with artificial intelligence is that AI could be used for both deceptive and authoritarian purposes.
Furthermore, when artificial intelligence is developed, promoted and embraced as a tool for the purposes of moral and spiritual leadership, then a line has been crossed where a man-made technology has been effectively converted into a false god.
Below are 4 reasons why we should beware of using AI as a moral and spiritual authority
1. An AI is not made in the image of God.
AI did not create humanity, nor did artificial intelligence create a single speck of the entire universe. There is only one perfect moral and spiritual authority, and that is the one true living God.
In the beginning, God alone is the Creator of humanity and the universe (Genesis 1:1-31).
Humanity was made in the image of God, therefore humans have a soul, spirit and conscience – unlike AI systems.
An AI robot or artificial intelligence system might be able to imitate or project the appearance of emotion and feelings, but the system still remains as software code, algorithms and computer hardware at their core.
2. Man should not worship his own creation and nor should he worship God’s creation.
Romans 1:21-23 says: For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
God did not create man to be dominated by machines and to look towards machines for moral and spiritual leadership. Instead man is to only worship the one true God and nothing else (Exodus 20:3-4).
Dependence on AI as a moral and spiritual truth-giver could be dangerous and open many doors of spiritual deception. Instead Christians should rely on the Bible and personal relationship with God to know and understand the things of God.
3. An AI god cannot spiritually save anyone.
Mankind at his core is a sinner who has transgressed against a just and holy God (Romans 3:23).
A digital AI god cannot solve the problem of sin because sin is a spiritual problem at its root.
Sin can only be resolved through Jesus Christ (John 1:29) and when man believes and accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Ephesians 1:7 says: In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.
Therefore no amount of AI influence can solve humanity’s inward problem of sin and wickedness. So an AI god will fail dismally because the problem of humanity requires a spiritual solution through Jesus Christ and no one else.
Acts 4:12 says: And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
4. AI algorithms and software code can be manipulated and used for nefarious purposes.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to implement deceptive and unethical agendas. For example AI systems can be programmed to be biased and produce the wrong results so that the system is generating data and information that serves to deceive and control the general public.
AI systems are only as good as the data they possess or store. If the data is biased or incomplete, the AI system will produce biased results.
Therefore AI systems can be programmed to be biased in regards to economic, social, cultural, moral and spiritual issues in order to mislead, manipulate and sway people’s opinions on various topics and issues.
These are the very reasons why we must beware to turning AI systems into some kind of a god over humanity.
Conclusion
Whilst AI (artificial intelligence) can bring tremendous benefits and advantages, there are serious dangers associated with artificial intelligence.
There must be a strong line that must be drawn to avoid giving AI systems moral and spiritual authority and leadership over humanity.
Mankind was created to have dominion over the earth and over the creatures on the earth – not AI.
Man was created to worship the one true living God and to be in relationship with Him. Humanity was not created to worship or submit to his own creation.
Humanity should beware of surrendering total human control, decision making and freewill to AI systems, as this may lead to disastrous results.
Therefore, having some kind of AI god as advocated by various people, would be equivalent to idolatry.
