5 Qualities of Biblical Manhood

What is Biblical Manhood? What are the traits or pillars of Biblical masculinity?
Whether a man is single or married, Biblical manhood does not focus on the outward or material possessions of a man such as his finances, assets or the quality of the clothes he wears. It is possible for a man to have material possessions, popularity and wealth but not have the traits of Biblical manhood.
Therefore Biblical manhood focuses on the internal and spiritual characteristics of a man in accordance with the word of God.

Biblical manhood requires men to have the following qualities or principles:

1. Men must be rooted in the Scriptures
The principles of Biblical masculinity is that every man must be a man of God whose life is guided by the word of God. A godly man studies the word of God. He does not live according to the standards and moral principles of the world, but he lives according to the value systems mentioned in the Scriptures.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says:  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

2. Men must be good leaders
Biblical masculinity requires men to be good leaders in the home and in society. Men must be governed by wisdom and good leadership ethics.

In 1 Kings 2:2-3NLT before his death, David told his young son Solomon “take courage and be a man”.

Solomon would become the next king and David would give his son advice on what Solomon needed to do in order to become a good king.
In 1 Kings 2:2-3NLT David says: “I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. 3 Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all His ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.”

Furthermore, in the home men must also be good leaders for their families
Ephesians 6:4 says: Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

1 Peter 3:7 says: Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Within a local church, a leader such as a deacon, elder or pastor is required to be a husband with one wife and whose household is in order (1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6)

Therefore Biblical manhood is about portraying the qualities of a good leader both in society and in the home.

3. Men must pursue godly virtues
A quality of Biblical manhood is that men should seek virtues such as humility, kindness, integrity, righteousness and many other virtues that contribute towards having a good personality. Without good men with good values, we cannot have good leaders, good families or a good society.

Micah 6:8 says: He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

1 Timothy 6:11 says: But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

4. Men must not act like children
A trait of Biblical masculinity is that as a man grows in age, then he should also grow in cognitive, emotional and spiritual maturity.

1 Corinthians 13:11 says: When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

Therefore Biblical manhood encourages men to become mature in thought, reasoning and action.

5. Men must portray strength and courage
Men are required to show strength of character. A man cannot lead if he is swayed by every mood and emotion. Instead Biblical masculinity requires men to be firm, stable, self-controlled and strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13 says: Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

Conclusion

The world needs men, but not just any kind of man. The world needs men who are godly and virtuous. The world needs men who courageously and unashamedly stand for righteousness and moral living.
It needs men who are not controlled by various lusts and toxic emotions. The world needs quality men with self-control and emotional intelligence.
Biblical masculinity is about men who love God and desire to follow Him. It is about men who imitate the nature and character of the perfect man who ever lived – Jesus Christ.
