How many Genders are there?

How many genders are there? Is there really a difference between sex and gender? Does science and biology prove how many genders really exist? What does the Bible say about gender?
For centuries, most if not all cultures, religions and societies throughout history have taught and believed that there are only two genders. Since the beginning of time the existence of male and female as the only two genders was a fact.

Genesis 1:27 reads: So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

It used to be unfathomable to discuss or doubt the idea that there could be more than two genders.
However because of the recent rise and influence of the LGBTQ movement, issues related to gender and sex have been incredibly distorted and redefined. So in addition to male and female, the LGBTQ movement currently recognizes as many as 72 supposed gender identities or expressions ranging from: bigender, genderqueer, genderfluid, nonbinary, omnigender, polygender, trigender, transgender and many more.

Where the normal pronouns to identify male or female were “she/her/hers, he/him/his”, the LGBTQ movement have also attempted to change language and terms in order to force people to use certain other pronouns when referencing people who identify with the other gender identities they created.

Does Science & Biology Prove only Two Genders?

Biologically, every human being has either an X and a Y chromosome (XY), and is therefore biologically male, or has two X chromosomes (XX), and is therefore biologically female.
Since females possess two X chromosomes (XX), females are biologically capable of conception, pregnancy and giving birth. Females possess ovaries, a uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. A female’s pelvis bones are shaped differently than males. This rule will apply to most species because the female is usually a child-bearer.

Since males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY), the Y chromosome contains a “male-determining” gene called an SRY gene. It signals to the developing human embryo to create a penis and testicles. Without an SRY gene, the embryo develops a vagina and ovaries.

So there is no person on earth who can produce a sex cell that isn’t either an egg or a sperm. This is why nature and biology itself testifies to the existence of only 2 specific genders. No amount of hormone therapy, plastic surgery or any sex change procedures can change this fact.

Human procreation would not be possible without the male and female gender. Procreation can only occur between men and women. Therefore soon after God created the first man and woman, He told them to “be fruitful and multiply”  on the earth (Genesis 1:28). This meant that God wanted Adam and Eve to increase the human population because He created men and women with different sexual organs to procreate.

Is there a Difference between Sex and Gender?

The LGBTQ movement and its advocates claim that there is a distinction between gender and sex.

According to transgender ideology, your gender identity has to do with your personal sense of self. It is not always linked to your biological sex. It’s how you, as an individual, conceptualize your own gender. In other words, your gender identity can be whatever you want it to be.

Gender expression, on the other hand, is how you express your gender identity. Many do this through clothing, behavior, hairstyle, voice, appearance, name change, and pronouns.

So by redefining terms and creating new meaning to the words “sex” and “gender” the LGBTQ movement claims a distinction or separation between one’s biological sex and one’s gender identity.

However in contrast, biologically, if a man decides to identify as a female, it wouldn’t change the fact that this man does not have the biological qualities and characteristics of a woman. For example, a biological man who identifies as a female would still not be able to produce an egg, become pregnant and neither will he have two X chromosomes (XX) just because he feels like a woman or identifies as a woman. Even a physical sex change would not change his chromosomes.

Therefore a person’s sex and gender are equal despite the gender dysphoria that one may be experiencing.

What does the Bible say about Gender Identity?

The Bible is also explicitly consistent in equating gender with biological sex. There is no gender spectrum even hinted at in the Bible.
Apart from male and female, none of the other currently 72 gender identities are ever mentioned in the Bible.

1. The Bible is consistent in defining marriage as between a man and a woman and that only two genders exist.
In Mark 10:6-9 Jesus says: “But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

2. The Bible is consistent in its opposition to homosexuality or anything reflecting transgenderism.
Romans 1:26-28 says: For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

3. The Bible is consistent in warning about the consequences of homosexuality.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says: Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality… will inherit the kingdom of God.

Conclusion
There is a massive push around the world to normalize LGBTQ lifestyle, culture and ideology. This ideology has unfortunately infiltrated many churches that once stood by Biblical principles and doctrine.
People living under the sin and deception of transgender ideology need to be lovingly told about the physical, mental and spiritual dangers of engaging in such lifestyles.
Therefore whilst Biblical Christians oppose homosexuality, it is imperative that Biblical Christians continue to lovingly uphold the word of God and continue to teach, preach and live according to the word of God.
