What Must I Do To Be Saved?

Acts 16:30-31 ESV
Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

What does the term “to be saved” mean? Why do I need to be saved? What must I do to be saved?

What Does It Mean “To Be Saved”?
The term “saved” is a Christian/Biblical term which refers to a genuine believer and follower of Jesus Christ. The term “saved” also refers to the guarantee of heaven through Jesus Christ and therefore a person who is saved is – “saved” from eternal damnation in hell.
A person who is “saved” is a person who has a personal and genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ. He/she is a genuine Christian. Another term for saved used in Christian & Biblical terminology would be “born again”. (John 3:3 ESV – Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”).
This salvation is FREE and only comes through the Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ.
A Christian is therefore “saved” from eternal hell and “saved” to be eternally with God in heaven.
John 3:16-17 NKJV – For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Why Do I Need To Be Saved?
The truth is every human being needs to be saved. Every human being needs Jesus Christ to become his/her personal Lord & Saviour. If a person does not receive salvation through Jesus, there are eternal consequences to such a choice.
Rejecting God’s free offer of salvation through Christ automatically means accepting (willingly or unwillingly) the fate of eternal damnation in hell (Romans 6:23 NKJV – For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord).
Why does every human being need to be saved? It’s because every person is a sinner or wrong-doer before God (Romans 3:23 NKJV – For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God).
Every person has broken God’s laws and commandments and therefore deserves to be punished by a righteous and just God.
We also cannot save ourselves even through our personal good works because by nature we are sinners and lawbreakers and cannot satisfy the debt required to pay for our sins (Romans 3:10 ESV – As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;”).
However, because of God’s love and His mercy, God offers salvation freely through His Son Jesus who gave Himself as a ransom and the perfect sacrifice to pay the sin debt that we cannot pay.
Mark 10:45 ESV – For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to
follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting” (John 3:16). “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16)
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.

5. RECEIVE: “He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Saviour and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God.
