How Do I Avoid Going To Hell?

How does a person end up going to hell and what does that person need to do in order to avoid going to hell?

What is Hell?
In Matthew 25:41 we learn that hell is a terrifying place of eternal punishment which God originally prepared for the devil and the fallen angels. However, people will also go to hell according to the scriptures.
Hell is described in the following ways:
a) It is a place of everlasting fire (Matthew 25:41)
b) It is a place of outer darkness (Matthew 22:13; Matthew 25:30)
c) It is a place of weeping & gnashing of teeth (Matthew 22:13; Matthew 25:30)
d) It is a place of eternal torment (Luke 16:22-28)
e) It is a lake of fire burning with brimstone (Revelation 19:20)

What Kind of People Will Go To Hell?
The Bible tells us that all people are sinners and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Therefore the whole of mankind has sinned or transgressed against an infinite and holy God (Romans 3:10).
The Bible then tells us that the wages of sin is death which is eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23).
Therefore all mankind deserves to go to hell. However, despite the fact that mankind deserves to go to hell, God offers us forgiveness by His grace through Jesus Christ. Romans 6:23 further says that the FREE GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Salvation is a gift of God. It is free and can only be received through believing and accepting Jesus Christ as personal Lord & Saviour.
John 1:12 says “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name”.

So what kind of people will go go hell? People who reject Jesus Christ and the free gift of eternal life that He offers will go to hell.
Jesus Christ paid our penalty for sin. He bore our sins on the cross (1 Peter 2:24) so that if we accept His work on the cross and receive Him as Lord then we will have eternal life.
Therefore if a person rejects a relationship with Jesus Christ; if that person also rejects the work of Christ on the cross and His payment for our sins at Calvary, it would mean hell for such a person.

Ephesians 2:8,9 tells us that salvation is a free gift received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Salvation is NOT by personal effort or our personal ability. Therefore you cannot earn your way to Heaven. Some people believe they can earn their way to Heaven through their personal charitable works; or through trying to obey the 10 commandments; or through obeying certain religious rites and rituals. These views are not correct.
Avoiding hell is easier than we think and it is only through accepting Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

How Do I Avoid Going To Hell?
It is a simple thing to avoid going to hell. The Bible is clear that there is only ONE WAY to avoid going to hell. Jesus Christ.
John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me”.
To avoid going to hell, we must through faith receive and put our trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord & Saviour.
Without faith in Jesus we cannot become children of God. John 1:12 says “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” and Galatians 3:26 says “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus”.

Salvation through Christ is a gift from God. Nobody earns or works for a gift but a gift is freely given by the giver. Salvation is by grace and not by works.
Ephesians 2:8,9 says “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”.

Do You Want To Avoid Going To Hell?
God does not desire for anyone to go to hell. God wants us all to avoid going to hell.
2 Peter 3:9 says “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance”.
Jesus Christ paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sins so that we would not perish in hell. Jesus Christ paid the debt we could not pay. He bore our sins and He took our punishment (1 John 2:2).
If you want to avoid going to hell, simply accept and trust in Jesus Christ to be your Lord & Saviour today (John 1:12; John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8,9).
It is that simple – because salvation is a gift that you receive by simply trusting in Jesus Christ as your Lord & Saviour.

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This means that we have all broken God’s laws and God’s 10 Commandments like those mentioned in Exodus 20:1-17. For example, if you have told a lie; if you have stolen something; if you have lusted after somebody or if you have coveted. This means you are guilty of breaking at least one or more of God’s 10 Commandments. Breaking God’s commandments makes us sinners. The fact that we are sinners who have broken God’s law means that we are accountable to God who is the Lawgiver. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner who has broken God’s commandments and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God

Today, if you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord & Saviour and if you want to avoid going to hell simply believe and trust in Jesus Christ and allow Him to take Lordship over your life.
