What is God Like?

What is God like? What is God’s nature and attributes? Every person including the atheist has some concept of God and what He is like.
For us to understand what God is like, we need to read His word. We need to discover what the Bible says about the character of God.

The Bible describes God’s attributes in the following ways:

1. God Cannot Lie
God does not lie. He is incapable of telling a lie and He will never speak a lie.
Numbers 23:19 says “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

2. God is Spirit
God is immaterial and therefore He cannot be represented by any material or man-made thing. This is why making idols or images in an attempt to represent God is forbidden according to Exodus 20:4,5.
John 4:24 says God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

3. God is Merciful
Mercy is when God withholds giving us that which we deserve. For example, all mankind are sinners and therefore we all deserve to go to hell. However God has shown mercy to those people who accept Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour in that when they die they will go to heaven.
Titus 3:5Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

4. God is Faithful
God can be fully relied upon. God does not break His promises. God can be totally trusted because He is good and faithful.
1 Thessalonians 5:24He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

5. God is Love
God is the full expression of love. God is motivated by love in whatever He does. For example according to John 3:16 it was out of love that God sent Christ to die for our sins on the cross.
1 John 4:8He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

6. God is Patient
God’s timing is always perfect. God is never late. God is patient those who deserve immediate punishment. God is patient to Christians who continue to grow step by step in Christ.
2 Peter 3:9The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

7. God is True
God is true in whatever He says. Not only does God speak truth but He IS the truth. He is the only true God and there is no other.
Romans 3:4 says “…let God be true but every man a liar…”

8. God is Gracious
God is full of grace. Grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve. For example, even though we deserve to be punished in hell because we are sinners, it is by the grace of God that we are saved and receive the free gift of eternal life through Christ.
Ephesians 2:8,9For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

9. God is Righteous or Just
God is fair. He cannot be corrupted. His decisions and judgments are always correct & fair.
Deuteronomy 32:4He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.

10. God is Good
God cannot be tainted. He is kind; He cannot sin; He is sinless; He is perfect.
Psalms 145:9The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.

11. God is Slow to Anger
Does God get angry? Yes He does. However, the Bible says that He is patient and “slow to anger and abounding in mercy” (Psalms 103:8).

12. God Cannot Change
God’s nature does not change. He will always be perfect; He will always be loving; He will always be just and gracious.
Hebrews 13:8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever

13. God is Eternal
God exists outside of time and outside of creation; He is the Creator of time and creation itself but He exists outside of time.
Psalms 90:2Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

14. God is Omni-potent
He is all powerful. There is no one and there is nothing that is more powerful than Him
Job 11:7-11“Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? 8 They are higher than heaven — what can you do? Deeper than Sheol — what can you know? 9 Their measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea.

15. God is Omni-present
God is everywhere at the sametime and everywhere throughout time
Psalms 139:7Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

16. God is Omniscient
God knows everything. There is nobody who can counsel God because He is all knowing.
Isaiah 40:13,14Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has taught Him? 14 With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him, And taught Him in the path of justice?
Who taught Him knowledge, And showed Him the way of understanding?

17. God is Self-Existent
God is the uncaused cause. He is I AM; God is eternal; He is not a result of anything
Exodus 3:14And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.

18. God is Life
God is the creator, the source and the sustainer of life. Without Him there cannot be any life as we know it.
John 1:3,4All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Do You Know God?
The above are just but a few attributes of God. The question however is – do you know God? Do you know that He loves you? Do you know that God is gracious towards you? Do you know that God wants you to have eternal life and not got to hell? Do you know that God desires to have a personal relationship with you through Jesus Christ?

If you desire to have a personal relationship with God, you can do so by becoming a born again Christian. Accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord & Saviour gives you access to God (John 14:6).

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to
follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God

Why Not Make Your Eternal Decision NOW?

We become born again Christians by GRACE through FAITH or TOTAL TRUST in Jesus Christ as our Lord & Savior (Galatians 3:26) & (Ephesians 2:8,9). Salvation is a FREE gift received through FAITH in Christ.

PLEASE NOTE: You can choose to pray in your own words. This prayer is a sample prayer and it is only an EXPRESSION of your faith, belief & trust in Jesus. Salvation is by GRACE through FAITH or BELIEVING in Christ Jesus as your Lord & Saviour.

“Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your love. I thank You that You died on the cross for me and resurrected so that I may have life through You.
I confess Lord that I have sinned against You and today I ask You to forgive me of all of my sins, past present and future.
I repent of all of my sins and I ask You to cleanse me Jesus.
Thank You for forgiving my sins.
From this moment, come into my life Lord Jesus & take full control of my life. I want to follow You Jesus and I want to follow Your ways. Save me and from today, make me the person You want me to be.
I receive You Lord Jesus right now by faith. I trust You as my Lord and Savior – Amen”
