What is Idolatry?
Exodus 20:3
You shall have no other gods before Me.
Idolatry is the worship of idols or the excessive reverence for someone or something. In Christianity, an idol refers to anything that replaces the one, true God.
Therefore, when we worship, revere or devote ourselves to anything that replaces God – then we are committing idolatry.
Idolatry is not just the worship of man-made images or objects; Idolatry is not just the worship of creatures or natural things.
In today’s modern world, movie stars and all kinds of celebrities can be idols; Money & possessions can be idols; Social media can be an idol; Your profession or career can be an idol. Your leader or pastor can be an idol; even you can be your own idol.
If at anytime we systematically esteem someone or something above God then that person or thing becomes an idol.
Matthew 6:24 says “Noone can serve 2 masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money”.
There is only one true God. However, mankind has created many false gods. There are more than 300 million false gods or idols that are worshipped by people or different religions in the world.
Even a person who claims to be an atheist idolizes someone or something in his/her life.
Colossians 3:5
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Idolatry is an issue of the heart. A person doesn’t have to pray or bow down to something in order to idolize or worship an idol.
Idolatry is an issue of the heart in that if our attitude, actions and decisions reflect that we are systematically devoted to something else other than God or the things of God then we are committing idolatry.
What is it in your life that consistently hinders you from spending a few minutes to read God’s word? Is it the television; is it social media?
What is it that consistently prevents you from spending a few minutes to pray to God? Is it your job; is it the other commitments you have in your day?
Do you find yourself consistently being more interested in following the philosophies, ideas & life of a celebrity or other person instead of following God?
Be encouraged to always take the time to worship and revere God during your daily life.
1 Corinthians 10:14
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
God wants us to only worship Him alone because He is the only one true God. He is the God of the Bible. He is the only Creator of the universe and we should have no other gods in our life except Him alone.
ARE YOU A BELIEVER & A FOLLOWER OF THE ONE TRUE GOD?
DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???
1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.
2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to repent of sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to
follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.
3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.
4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God
