Should Christians Evangelize Atheists?

Atheism is the belief that God or gods do not exist. An atheist is therefore one who does not believe that the universe and all of creation are the result of intelligent design or a supernatural Being.
Many atheists will also provide arguments and theories such as evolution or the Big Bang as evidence to the world that God or gods cannot possibly exist.
For many years, atheism has been growing in almost every continent around the world. China is known to have the most atheists in the world, then Europe, the Americas and finally Africa. The growth in the atheist demographic has been due to the influence of evolution education and various scientific researches which are ironically conducted by other atheists. The theory of evolution is taught at a young age and many evolutionist theories are propagated as truth and fact despite their inconsistencies and irrationalities. Ultimately, the more evolution is embraced, the more religion becomes unpopular.
The Bible tells us that creation itself, such as the stars, the planets, the animals, the plants and all forms of life is evidence that a Creator exists. The existence of life as well as the nature and order of the universe testify to the existence of an intelligent Designer.
Romans 1:20 says: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — His eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
However atheists will not submit to the rational belief that the universe did not create itself from nothing. Many atheists will not admit the fact that intelligent design exists.
Instead, atheists will seek to educate and defend atheism and every scientific theory or research that supports their belief and argument that God does not exist.
Therefore atheism is an anti-God concept. It is a concept which the devil has created to deceive people, but it is also a concept that even the devil himself does not believe.
Psalms 14:1 says “The fool says in his heart ‘There is no God’…”
Therefore whilst atheism is a foolish concept, because it believes that creation does not have a creator – atheism is still a dangerous concept because of its arguments, its deception and its continued growth.
Should Christians Evangelize Atheists?
Atheism is one of the most extreme expressions of man’s rebellion against God. It also expresses man’s desire to totally live without God.
Atheism exists because of a fallen world. Man is sinful by nature. Man is not born good but instead he is born a sinner (Romans 3:10,23).
As sinners we have an inbuilt nature to rebel against God and to contradict the things of God. The theories of evolution and the Big Bang contradict the Biblical account of creation and provide the deceptive argument that life and the universe existed from nothing, instead of God.
God desires that Christians unashamedly evangelize anyone who is spiritually lost and has not believed in the gospel (Romans 1:16).
Christians are required to evangelize the atheist just as much as they should evangelize to a witchdoctor, a Buddhist, a prostitute, a cultist, a Greek, a Jew, or any person who has not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord & Saviour.
Mark 16:15 says we are to “proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”
Therefore there is no created human being who should be excluded from hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ or excluded from understanding the divine character and nature of God. If we are all sinners, then all are in need of the gospel and therefore all need a saving relationship with God.
Jesus Christ was crucified for the entire world, including atheists, so that whoever believes in Christ will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
God is patient toward everyone, including the atheist and He does not want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9).
Ultimately as every Christian shares the gospel with people, whether they are atheist or not, it is the duty alone of the Holy Spirit to bring conviction of sin and to convert the sinner as the gospel / word of God is shared (John 16:8, Romans 1:16).
Whilst most atheists are prone to argue, debate or ferociously defend his/her atheism, this should not deter Christians from sharing the word of God to people who oppose the scriptures. If anyone is willfully living in rebellion to God (whether atheist or not), then that person must graciously and lovingly be given the gospel of Christ and make an informed spiritual choice whether to accept God or not.
Jesus Himself constantly encountered people who opposed God’s word but yet He continued to focus on sharing and defending God’s word to anyone who would be willing to listen.
According to the Scriptures, Christians should be able to defend and contend for the Christian faith (Jude 1:3; 1 Peter 3:15).
It is therefore important for every Christian to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit when engaging with atheists or anyone who has beliefs which are contrary to Christianity.
Many testimonies exist from former atheists of how they eventually converted to Christianity through the faithfulness and obedience of those Christians who unashamedly share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
