Is The World Getting Better or Worse?
Is the world getting better or worse? Does it seem as if humanity is heading in the right direction socially, economically, technologically and even spiritually?
Many might look at how humanity has evolved or developed in such areas as science and technology and present the argument that the world is actually getting better.
After all, people may argue that there’s been more scientific and technological advancements in the last 100 years than any time in the history of the world.
So it is argued that our scientific and technological advancement is evidence that our world is improving and is on the right track.
Even scripture such as Daniel 12:4 says there will be an increase in knowledge in the last days.
However, when we look at the various prophecies in Scripture and compare these prophecies with what is actually happening in the world today, we will notice that the world is actually getting worse and not better. According to Scripture the world will be worse before the second coming of Jesus Christ.
The Moral & Spiritual Condition of Humanity Reflects That The World Is Getting Worse
All events and signs that will pre-date the second coming of Christ will reveal that the world is getting worse instead of better.
Matthew 24:37-39 – As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
During the days of Noah, God had decided that He would destroy all living things through a flood because of the wickedness that had filled the earth (Genesis 6:5-7).
In their continued state of wickedness and desire for sinful pleasure, people were oblivious to the coming judgment and believed that their sins would not have any consequence from God.
Therefore Jesus says just “as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man”.
We live in a world that now glorifies various sinful pleasures which were detested or uncultural in the past – from homosexuality, transgenderism, corruption, hypocrisy, strife and all other kinds of sinful lifestyles. These days unethical and sinful values are championed and accepted above righteousness.
The world is now upside-down. The things and values which were castigated as evil are now being championed as being “good” and the values which are good are today being shunned and promoted as being “evil”.
Isaiah 5:20-21 says: Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!
Therefore whilst there has been advancements in science and technology and other areas of knowledge, the Bible reveals that humanity is spiritually and morally getting worse and hence this will have a ripple effect on the state of the world.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 says: But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
So from 2 Timothy 3:1-5 we discover that in the last days humanity will get worse instead of better. Just as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days before the coming of Jesus Christ.
Signs From Nature Reflect That The World Is Getting Worse
Jesus Christ also spoke of some signs that will begin to happen before His second coming. He said there would be natural events in the world that would reflect that things will get worse instead of better. He said there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains (Matthew 24:7-8).
In Luke 21:11 Jesus says: There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
Therefore the growing and consistent natural signs that we witness such as earthquakes, fires, massive floods and even pestilences or diseases are a grim reminder that the world is not getting better.
Even climate change activists and environmentalists are warning the world that there are physical or natural changes happening with the climate that may lead the world into some kind of catastrophe.
The Increase In Spiritual Deception Reflects That The World Is Getting Worse
Jesus Christ warned that before His coming, one of the signs that the world will become worse concerns the increase in deception from false teachers and false prophets (Matthew 24:3-4; Matthew 24:10-11).
Therefore spiritual deception will play a huge part in ensuring that the world gets worse instead of better. In the world today many are falling away from the faith in pursuit of false gospels and false teachers.
In 2 Timothy 3:13, Paul speaks of “evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.“
In 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Paul says that Christ cannot come until the antichrist (or man of lawlessness) is revealed who will perform false signs and wonders to deceive the world. This scripture also says that before Christ comes there will be a “strong delusion” for those who “refused to love the truth and so be saved.”
Jesus Christ also warned that before His second coming there will be an increase in persecutions of Christians because of the gospel and their Christian faith (Matthew 24:9).
Therefore all events that will pre-date the Second Coming of Christ will reveal that the world is getting worse instead of better.
How Should Humanity Respond To The Evidence That The World Is Getting Worse?
If you are a Christian believer, you have the responsibility of warning people and using this Biblical fact as an opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The things of this world are temporary. The love of this world and the things of this world puts us at enmity with God (1 John 2:15-17; John 15:18; James 4:4).
Our focus should therefore be on Jesus Christ and on becoming citizens of heaven by receiving Him as Lord and Saviour (Philippians 3:20).
Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ will help unbelievers to remove their focus from the temporal things of the world so that the follow Jesus Christ who is able to give man eternal life and bring man into a right relationship with God.
If you’re not a Christian – you have an opportunity to think about the true state of your relationship with God. We are all sinners and nobody is perfect (Romans 3:23). However, even though humanity is morally and spiritually getting worse, Jesus Christ paid for our sins on the cross and He offers us the free gift of eternal life (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9). We can be forgiven of all our sins, past, present and future if we would genuinely confess that we are sinners who need Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Saviour. So as long as we have life, we have an opportunity to accept Jesus Christ and become a true follower of Christ. When Christ returns He will bring judgement and order to a lost world.
So where will you go when you die? If Jesus Christ was to return today, would you be ready? Is it worth it to pursue the temporal things of this world when one should be seeking God and the eternal things of heaven? (Matthew 6:19-21).
In Matthew 24:42-44 Jesus says: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him”
DO YOU WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN or A FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST???
1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This means that we have all broken God’s laws and God’s 10 Commandments like those mentioned in Exodus 20:1-17. For example, if you have told a lie; if you have stolen something; if you have lusted after somebody or if you have coveted. This means you are guilty of breaking at least one or more of God’s 10 Commandments. Breaking God’s commandments makes us sinners. The fact that we are sinners who have broken God’s law means that we are accountable to God who is the Lawgiver. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner who has broken God’s commandments and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.
2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to change your mind about sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.
3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.
4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God
