If God Made The Universe, Then Who Made God?

The general scientific consensus is that the universe had a beginning. However, one of the main issues between creationists and evolutionists is how the universe began to exist.
For example, according to space.com “The Big Bang Theory is the leading explanation about how the universe began. At its simplest, it says the universe as we know it started with a small singularity, then inflated over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today.”

So according to atheists and many scientists, the Big Bang Theory states the point in time when the universe began to exist.
And if the big bang theory states that space, time and matter had a beginning, then one still has to explain as to what or who caused this “big bang” in the first place.

Whoever or whatever caused the universe to exist, had to have the ability to operate or create outside the boundaries or parameters of time, space and matter.
Whoever or whatever caused the universe to exist, had to already have existed prior to the creation of time, space and matter.

When we look at the cellphone we use, or the car we drive, or the home we live in, there is no doubt at all that all these things have a maker. Even though we’ve never physically seen the inventors, we know that our cellphone or vehicle did not create themselves from nothing or through the cause of a “small singularity”. We understand that intelligent design was the cause of these created items.

However, regarding issues of life, nature and the universe, many atheists and skeptics will doubt that God is the source of creation. The question always comes up: If God made the universe, then who made God?

The quick answer to this question is this: Nobody created God; God was never made because God is infinite and eternal in His nature. God is the uncaused first cause of all things. God is the uncreated Creator of all things because God is an intelligent Being who belongs to a different class and category than His creation.

God Is In A Different Category From Creation

God is in a different category from all of His creation. Unlike His creation God is not bound by the laws of time, space and matter. Instead God is actually the Creator of time, space and matter.

Genesis 1:1 says: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

There are some important facts we can learn from Genesis 1:1-3 which are the following:

  1. This passage reveals that God existed before anything was ever created
  2. The Scripture also reveals that time, space and matter began with God. In the passage, time is represented by the words “in the beginning”, then space is “the heavens” and matter is “the earth”.
  3. This passage inclusive of Genesis 1:4-31 also reveals that God is the source of all things as He spoke everything into existence.

John 1:1-3 says: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

So everything we observe in life and the universe has a beginning because everything began with God.
Everything in creation is subject to natural or physical laws of which God is the source of those laws.

Isaiah 44:6 says: Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides Me there is no god.

So God is in a class or category all by Himself for which there is no other god that is before Him and there will be no other god after Him. God is the first and the last.

Our Limited Minds Cannot Understand An Infinite God

Hebrews 11:3 says: By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Our minds are limited. Our abilities are limited. Therefore our knowledge and understanding is limited.

As long as we are on earth in our limited form, we will never know everything there is to know about God.

The very nature of God is that He is eternal and infinite. God existed before time existed.
So our limited minds, which live in a limited environment, can never possess all knowledge about God and who He is.
What we know about God is what He chooses to reveal about Himself.
If we could understand everything there is to know about God – then God would seize to be God to us.
So God has many characteristics and attributes which distinguish Himself from His creation.

Even the skeptics and scientists who deny the existence of God do not know everything about every scientific subject. This is why they continue to study, experiment, theorize, and hypothesize.
So there are many questions we have about God and the universe about which we may never receive all the answers in this lifetime.

However, every person has been given a measure of faith. The question is: what or who is the object of our faith?

It also takes faith to be an atheist. Why? Because it takes faith to believe that nothing can create something – or that the universe and life on earth are results of random coincidences instead of intelligent design.

The Bible says that creation itself gives evidence that a Creator exists.
Romans 1:19-20 says: For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

We simply need to place our faith in the Creator of the universe because He alone is the answer to every question we have.
Hebrews 11:6 says: And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.

Conclusion
So who created God? Nobody created God. God has always existed. God is the uncaused First Cause. God is the uncreated Creator.
1 Timothy 1:17  – “To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen”
