The Christian’s Job Description

God has called us to a life of servanthood as Christians. We are to be His instruments of righteousness. The Lord desires that we live a life of serving Him as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
Matthew 28:19-20
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
What’s next when a person becomes a Christian? When we become saved or become Christians it is just the beginning. As Christians our purpose becomes eternal. We have heavenly directive from the Lord to accomplish God’s will and plan.
Please note that Christianity is a LIFESTYLE; it is Christ-like living; Christianity is a life of servanthood to God. It is of course more than just a job, but however I have used the phrase “Job Description” as part of my title in order to illustrate that every Christian has a general or universal duty that God has called us to perform when we become saved. Just like for example, motor mechanics all over the world are known to fix cars or school teachers are universally known to teach and equip school children.
Therefore every Christian has a universal duty or “job description” according to God’s word to perform. After all as Christians we work for the Lord and we are servants of the Lord.
Below is what I like to phrase The Christian’s Job Description
THE CHRISTIAN’S JOB DESCRIPTION
(1.) To Grow Spiritually in the Lord – (2 Peter 1:5-8 – For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.)
In any organization that an employee joins, he/she must be willing to develop himself and grow within the organization. Therefore as Christians who are part of God’s kingdom, it is important for every Christian to develop and grow spiritually by spending time with the Lord in prayer and by spending time reading, meditating and studying God’s word. As we grow spiritually we will also see that our maturity and character will begin to change through Christ so that we become more and more like Christ Jesus. A servant of the Lord must always be adequately equipped for the service that he/she performs. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.)
(2.) To Teach Others and to Live an Obedient Lifestyle – (John 14:23-24 – Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. And the word that you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.)
Every employee in an organization must adhere to the code of conduct of an organization. This is the same for a Christian. A servant of the Lord must be willing to adhere to God’s word and God’s kingdom principles. Our job as Christians is to live an obedient life to God’s word and teachings. If we profess to love God then we must obey Him. We are also called to teach other believers and non-believers to obey and adhere to God’s word and teachings. We are to make disciples of all nations. (2 Timothy 4:2-3 – Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.)
(3.) To Glorify God in All That We Do – (Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.)
Every employee in an organization must reflect the values and face of the company by their attitude and also by how they treat customers. If customers are not treated well, then the customers will stay away. Therefore whatever we do as Christians must be meant to give glory to God. As Christians, people ought to see the nature of God by the lifestyle we live. A servant of the Lord does not live for himself, but he lives for his Master. We cannot be people-pleasers neither can we seek to only please ourselves, but our total focus must be to please and glorify God by our actions and our words. (Romans 6:13 – Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.)
(4.) To Focus on Repentance & Salvation for the Unbeliever – (Matthew 4:17 – From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”)
Every employee in an organization ultimately serves the purpose of fulfilling the overall mission of the organization for which they work for. Concerning the kingdom of God, the message of repentance and salvation through Christ is the most important message that an unbeliever needs to hear. A lifestyle of sinful living must be corrected and rebuked and an unbeliever must be taught that God loves us but hates our sin. It is therefore our responsibility as Christians to teach and witness to the unbeliever of God’s offer of salvation through Jesus Christ if the unbeliever chooses to repent. It is also our responsibility to teach the unbeliever of the consequences of sinful living and of the ultimate punishment for not receiving God’s free gift of salvation through Christ Jesus. The message of the cross, the work of Christ to redeem us and man’s need for repentance from sin is the message that takes precedence above other messages. (Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.)
(5.) To Love God and To Love Our Neighbour – (Matthew 22:37-40 – And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”)
Every effective employee in an organization must have a good attitude. He/she must be a team player who gets along with his/her workmates and who is able to get along well with customers. Therefore, in Christianity our motives must be governed by our love for God first and our love for our neighbor. When our actions are governed by the love of God and love of man we allow ourselves to be governed by the very nature of God because God is love. Love is a commandment. It is not a feeling. If a Christian is to be effective, he/she must love God and he must love others. (1 John 4:8 – Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.)
(6.) To Exercise Spiritual Gifts & Spiritual Authority – (Mark 16:17-18 – And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”)
When a servant or employee is given responsibility, then there must come authority to implement that responsibility. Therefore God since God has given every Christian responsibilities, this also means that He has given us authority to fulfill the responsibilities that He has given us. God has given us in Christ Jesus, the authority to overcome all the power of the enemy for the glorification of God’s name. (Luke 10:19-20 – Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”)
(7.) To Conform Only to God’s Values & Not to The World’s Standards – (Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.)
Generally in any organization, there is a rule that there must not be any conflict of interest among its employees. An employee cannot work for a company and work with that company’s competitor at the same time. In the same sense, God does not allow Christians to serve Him and serve the enemy at the same time. From the world comes all satanic, fleshly and unbiblical teachings and standards which God does not tolerate. The world serves the devil and adhere to the devil’s doctrine in all its forms. (1 John 2:15-17 – Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.)
The true Biblical sense of the Christian faith is NOT to strive to accumulate money, wealth and possessions like the “prosperity gospel” preachers teach, and then at some point sit back and say “Hey look how God has blessed me?”
The true Biblical Christian faith is NOT about finding our personal comfort zone in life and in this world; and then trying not to offend anyone while we wait to go to Heaven.
The Christian faith is more than attending conferences and church meetings.
EVERY CHRISTIAN NEEDS TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN DOING THE JOB THAT GOD HAS CALLED US TO DO IN HIS WORD.
EVERY CHRISTIAN NEEDS TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE GREAT COMMISSION TO BRING MORE SOULS TO GOD.
There is an eternal purpose to fulfill. Are you performing God’s job description for your life?
