How to Seek God’s Will (Part 2) – God’s Word

In the first part of the series of How To Seek God’s Will (Part 1), I summarized that in order to discover God’s will or purpose for your life we need to do the following:
(1) READ, STUDY & MEDIATE GOD’S WORD
(2) SPEND TIME WITH GOD
(3) ASK GOD FOR WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IN YOUR LIFE
(4) DON’T LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING
(5) TRUST GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART & HAVE FAITH IN HIM
(6) COMMIT ALL YOUR PLANS TO HIM FIRST AND SEEK HIS GUIDANCE THROUGH HIS WORD AND BY HIS SPIRIT.
(7) LEARN TO LISTEN, RECOGNIZE AND OBEY HIS VOICE
Therefore in Part 2 we will focus on (1) READ, STUDY & MEDITATE GOD’S WORD.
Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
The primary way of knowing God’s will & purpose for your life is through God’s word.
Some people might consult horoscopes in order to make decisions; some look to dreams & feelings; some hope to hear God’s audible voice; some might look for somebody to “prophesy” over them.
However if you desire to seek God’s specific will for your life and for various situations in your life, then you must read, study, meditate and obey God’s word. You must seek your Maker through His word in order to understand the will and plans that He has for you.
In Joshua 1:8, God promised Joshua that his way would be prosperous and successful if Joshua was to meditate on God’s word and to obey according to what is written in it.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Do you want to be thoroughly equipped for God’s will and work for your life? Do you desire to know God’s will and plan for your life? Are you confused about which direction to take in your life? Do you desire to know how to solve a specific issue in your life?
If the answer is “YES”, then you need to study and meditate God’s word if you are seeking God’s will and plan for your life. Paul tells Timothy that God’s word is profitable for (a) doctrine (b) reproof (c) correction and (d) instruction in righteousness.
The Bible speaks of God’s nature and God’s values. And whatever plan that God has for your life, that plan will always be consistent with God’s nature and God’s values.
Too often when we are confused about life or about which direction or decision to make in our lives, we are quick to seek answers to our issues from friends, relatives or other people rather than to FIRST seek answers to our issues or problems through the word of God.
Therefore if you are seeking God’s will for your life learn from Him through His word and allow His word to equip you for the good work that the Lord has for you.
John 14:21
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.
Do you want Jesus to manifest and reveal Himself to you? Do you want Him to reveal His plans for you? Then you must keep His word. You cannot separate God from His word. Neither can God contradict what He has spoken in His word. This is why meditating on God’s word is imperative if you are to know God’s will for your life. You cannot ask God to show you His will for your life but not be willing to study or meditate on His word. If you want Jesus to manifest in your life then you must be willing to manifest yourself to His word.
Psalm 119:9-11
How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
We see in Psalm 119:9-11 that the Psalmist prays to God that with his whole heart he seeks God. You will also notice that the Psalmist is aware that if he is to walk a clean path in life then he must “take heed according to God’s word” and he must not wander from God’s commandments.
Likewise in our own lives, our ability to discover God’s word and God’s will for our life or for specific circumstances is by knowing and meditating on God’s word.
