Why does the World hate and mock Jesus?
Hollywood films mock Jesus and Christianity. Various music artists and their music videos consistently mock and reveal their hatred for Jesus.
Why does the world mock Jesus and Christianity? What is it about Jesus Christ that always makes Him a target for ridicule, mockery and hatred by the world? Why are Christians easy target for persecution?
Why is it that other religions and belief systems are not mocked or hated in the way that Christianity has been targeted in the past and in our present day?
The Bible reveals the enmity between God and the world. The Scriptures reveal that any person who is a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
James 4:4 says: You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
In the Bible “The world” refers to the ungodly value systems and its people who promote, advocate and live according to secular ideologies, philosophies, cultures and the corrupt agendas which actively oppose Biblical teaching and the Kingdom of God.
Examples of secular or worldly belief systems that rebel against God and oppose Biblical Christian values include LGBTQ ideology, pro-abortion, woke culture, satanic entertainment, evolution, new age mysticism, corrupt economic systems and many other worldviews, philosophies and lifestyles which counter the value systems of the Kingdom of God.
The one who helms or wields control of the systems of this world is satan who is God’s archenemy. The Bible refers to satan as “the god of this world” because it is the devil who ultimately controls all the systems and beliefs in this world which oppose God, the Gospel and His kingdom.
2 Corinthians 4:4 says: In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Why does the World hate and mock Jesus?
1. The devil creates and controls the ungodly systems of this world.
Since satan is the “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), every system the devil controls is deliberately designed to ultimately train people to rebel against God and His word.
Therefore the world hates Jesus because its value systems are directly opposed to the laws of God. According to 2 Corinthians 4:4, the devil is working to blind people from receiving or understanding the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. So many of the secular systems of this world are designed to mentally and spiritually separate humanity from God and from having a relationship with God.
2. Jesus Christ is hated because He exposes the sins of this world.
In John 7:7 Jesus said the following: “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify that what it does is evil.”
Jesus Christ not only exposes the sins of the world, but He is the only Person who died for the sins of this world and who can ensure our forgiveness and redemption if we believe in Him.
However, the world is opposed to Jesus because the world loves evil and wickedness. The world is controlled by darkness, whilst Jesus is the Light.
John 3:19-21 Jesus says: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”
3. The world does not want the true God of the Bible.
The world wants a “god” who agrees with its wrong belief systems. Through such belief systems as atheism, evolution and new age religion – it is evident that the world does not want the God of the Bible. Through such belief systems the world does not think it needs a Savior or that its sin needs to be dealt with.
The world does not want any moral accountability to God. Instead the world itself desires to be its own god or create other gods by rebelling against the one true God.
Romans 1:20-23 says: For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
The Scriptures say the following regarding atheism: Psalms 14:1 says: The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.
Therefore the world hates Jesus and mocks Him by pretending or suppressing God’s existence in order to satisfy its own sinful behaviours and desires.
4. The World hates the followers of Jesus Christ.
The world not only despises Jesus, but it also hates true Christian believers who are willing to stand by the word of God. The world hates anyone who will unapologetically glorify Jesus Christ.
In John 15:18-19 Jesus said: “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”
So the world hates and mocks Jesus, but it also hates true Christian followers because Christians are supposed to become more like Jesus. True Christian believers do not conform to the beliefs of this world because the moment you become a genuine Christian, you are no longer a child of the world, but a child of God and a citizen of Heaven.
Romans 12:2 says: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Jesus Died for the World that Hates and Mocks Him
The world and its systems are at enmity with God and His kingdom. However Jesus paid the penalty for sin for the very world that hates Him and mocks Him.
While He bled on the cross and before He died on the cross Jesus prayed for the very forgiveness of the people who hated Him by crying “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34).
The Bible also states that Jesus died for us whilst we were still sinners or at enmity with God. Therefore Jesus paid the penalty for sin for all humanity because all people have sinned against God (1 John 2:2).
Ultimately we must choose a side. We cannot sit on the fence. We must either choose the kingdom of darkness or the kingdom of light; the god of this world or the one true living God who is the Creator of the entire universe.
May we choose God and desire to be followers of Jesus Christ who loved this world so much that He paid for the sins of this world on the cross.
In John 3:16-17 Jesus says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
