Are We All God’s Children?

Is everyone a child of God? Does every person regardless of background, religion or race have the right to call themselves children of God?

Universally, we are all the offspring of God in the sense that God is the physical Creator of all humanity, beginning with Adam. Every person has been created in the image of God unlike the rest of creation.

Acts 17:24-28 says: From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27 God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. 28 ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring.’

So in the natural sense, pertaining to the fact that God is our physical Creator, “we are His offspring” regardless of our religion, race or background.

However due to the fall of Man in the Garden of Eden, the Scriptures clearly differentiate between people who are spiritually children of God and people who are not God’s children.

For example, the existence of many religions or the worship of false gods is evidence that there are many people in the world who do not identify themselves as spiritual children to the God of the Bible.

Furthermore, atheists or agnostics do not believe in God at all, and therefore they cannot claim or identify themselves as God’s children.

Therefore because of the existence of sin in the world, there are many people who do not worship the one true God.
The Scriptures therefore define and differentiate between people who are spiritually God’s children and those who are not.

According to the Bible only a person who is born again/Christian/saved is viewed by God as being a child of God.

Bible Verses About People Who Are Children of God

John 1:12-13
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Romans 8:14-17
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

1 John 3:1
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

According to the Bible, a person can only become part of the spiritual family of God when he/she genuinely makes a decision to believe & receive Jesus Christ as his/her Lord & Saviour (John 1:12, John 3:16). So our identity as spiritual sons and daughters of God is linked to our relationship with Jesus Christ.

A person does not become a child of God on the virtue that they are God’s creation but we become children of God by believing that only Jesus Christ gives us access into the family of God by grace through faith in Him. (Ephesians 2:8, John 14:1-6)

God loves ALL people regardless of whether that person is Christian or non-Christian. However God loves us ALL so much that He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

Scriptural Names Given To Unbelievers

In the Scriptures, non-believers are never identified as being God’s spiritual children. Instead, non-believers are given other names which are as follows:

Sons of disobedience – Ephesians 2:2
Children of wrath – Ephesians 2:3
Children of the devil – John 8:44, 1 John 3:10
Friends of the World / Enemies of God – James 4:4

Therefore, as long as a person does not become a born again Christian, in the eyes of God this person is not seen as a child of God.

Would You Like To Become A Child of God Today?

Galatians 3:26 says: For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

2 Peter 3:9 says: The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

The love, mercy and grace of God is abundant and always present to allow any person to become a child of God.
So if you have never given your life to Christ or have never been born again – God is ready to freely receive you today as His son or daughter.

1. ACKNOWLEDGE: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
This means that we have all broken God’s laws and God’s 10 Commandments like those mentioned in Exodus 20:1-17. For example, if you have told a lie; if you have stolen something; if you have lusted after somebody or if you have coveted. This means you are guilty of breaking at least one or more of God’s 10 Commandments. Breaking God’s commandments makes us sinners. The fact that we are sinners who have broken God’s law means that we are accountable to God who is the Lawgiver. Romans 6:23 says that “the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
You must acknowledge that you are a sinner who has broken God’s commandments and that you therefore need Jesus in your life.

2. REPENT: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3), “Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19)
Repenting means: to change your mind; a sincere turning away, in heart, mind and action;
Therefore God wants you to change your mind about sinful values and of sinful living. God wants you to decide to follow Him and to make Jesus the Lord of your life.

3. CONFESSION: “If we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9)
God is a forgiving God. God will forgive any sin that you have done because Jesus died for ALL your sins and to set you free from the bondage of all types of sin in your life.

4. BELIEVE: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
You must believe that ONLY Jesus can save you and restore your relationship with God. You must believe that Jesus is the ONLY way by which you can have everlasting life and escape from eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus died on the cross for you and resurrected from the grave.
“He came to His own, and His own did not receive him, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12)
By faith, You must receive Jesus as Your Lord & Savior and therefore; you become a child of God; you become born again; you become a Christian; you restore your broken relationship with God
